Broken Pipes
A common problem during winter months is the freezing of water pipes. Each year these adverse events total millions of dollars in damages. This is often attributed to inadequate heating systems, poor insulation, power failure or human negligence. Regardless of the reason, when a pipe breaks it’s the fire department that residence and building owners call for help. When firefighters arrive to investigate, one of their first actions is to determine the orig...

Elevators, mechanical marvels used by millions of people every day reaching destinations high and low. Elevators rarely break down but when one does it’s wise to call an expert elevator mechanic to correct the problem. Their contact information should be posted on the elevator motor located in the elevator machinery room and in your department records. Firefighter must understand the difference between the annoyance of an elevator incident and the significance of an elevato...

2015 is upon us. Many departments have new company and chief officers. To those who are I say this. You were chosen to be a leader, leaders go first. A good company officer leads his members into position and then watches over them as if their lives depended on it, and it does. As they work the officer performs a constant vigilance to protect the crew from the dangers of the event. To the chiefs I say this. The men eat first, they should never go hungry. You are nothing without them. The better they are trained the better they are protected.

No Air Maneuver... is used in the extreme emergency when the SCBA fails to deliver air to the facepiece. This maneuver is intended to give firefighters a fighting chance to survive in a smoke filled atmosphere. Here are the steps to remember when no air is being delivered to the facepiece:
1. Don’t panic. Stop all other actions. Concentrate on the procedure. Work quickly.
2. Drop to the floor. The heat and smoke of a fire are more intense at the ceiling level. Dropping down m...

Pressure Reducers are designed to reduce pressure and volume from a standpipe outlet so untrained occupants can operate the house line. BUT. Volume and Pressure are two components a firefighter operating a hose line wants to have. So when you find a standpipe outlet with a pressure reducer attached, get rid of it. Firefighters control volume and pressure by opening and closing the control wheel at the outlet. Some PR are easily identifiable and some are not. During routine inspections company officers should note the locations that contain these devices. This information should be entered in your MDT and transmitted to responding units.

Duckbill Lock Breaker
The most popular portable lock is the padlock. To remove it many firefighters first reaction is to grab the bolt cutters. Years ago this wasn’t a bad choice but to day it just doesn’t cut it. The strength of today’s modern padlock has been raised to another level. Case hardened bodies and tempered steel bows will easily deform or distort the bolt cutter blades.
If the lock is exposed try using the duckbill lock breaker. The Duckbill is a large metal we...
