“You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4, not with a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness. You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism.” Erma Bombeck

  • Jimmy Raftery Ummm, I don't remember this fire EVER being called the Father's Day Massacre. I remember it being called the Father's Day Fire, or the Forgotten Fire in the wake of Sept. 11th. Sad story, especially reading about FF Downing's son.

  • Dave Kolts I remember growing up and going to our family reunions. I had just become a volunteer fireman in upstate NY. I always loved talking to Harry about the call they ran, planes sliding of runways into the sound, etc. When the three passed, I got to hear stories from his brothers at rescue 4, they told me Harry was always the guy that came out even under insurmountable odds. He was a true hero.
