Unheeded motherly advice can lead to some uncomfortable situations when the child grows up to be a firefighter.
My mother often told me to be careful what you wish for because you might get it. I have seen that in the fire service a few times.

An unprecedented outpouring of volunteers has inundated both centers, far outpacing the few available staff to process and deploy qualified volunteers.
It is unlikely many would be assigned to the front lines of fires who do not have firefighting experience.

  • Brett Miller It'd be very dangerous for an untrained citizen volunteer to fight a wild land fire which is why I'm trained citizen volunteer firefighters probably won't be on the front line....we do a mostly structural fire fighting but get the occasional wheat stubble 40 acre fire from time to Time and it's crazy just how fast that can move with a slight breeze let alone heavy timber with 20-30mph winds

Part of understanding why so many firefighters died in the recent explosions is knowing how their fire service is structured:
What is really needed, however, is the strict enforcement of the safety standards adopted, but not uniformly enforced, by Chinese authorities.

  • James Roy Sounds like poor training and pre-planning on the fire department's part. Getting hysterical and waiting for someone to show up with all the answers is not a form of research of the incident. The Chief sounds whiny and trying to point the finger at anyone but himself. Was to make yourself and your department look like a bunch of asses.

The crews were in the canyon in two vehicles and on foot when the flames raced toward them.

We were filling up the brush truck water tank in front of a house, tired at this point with no water to drink or anything, when the woman pulls into her driveway, goes inside and runs out with a case of water and then comes out with packs of soda! The gesture does go a long, long way.
