VIDEO; GUT RENOVATION- GENTRIFYING BROOKLYN; BY Su Friedrich

Well, here is a great documentary by a woman artist who pioneered the gentrification of a Brooklyn area..

I saw the same thing happen in Soho back in the 1970's and then further South to Tribeca etc.

I remember going to a huge, high volume party where a rueful artist was going out with a bang-- his big loft was being taken away from him as the building had been rezoned (he had been living there illegally of course, as was the fashion) and luxury condos were coming there to Greene Street South of Houston...

This process has gone on for so long in so many neighborhoods, all the small stores of these areas (especially in Brooklyn)are closing down as rents rise astronomically...to make way for the chic boutiques etc. and Whole Foods stores that are to come

Above: a bunch of well dressed speculators tour her area some years back and she screams at the them out the window to go away ( and, as she says, "make a fool of myself"

The big thing these days is talking about how neighborhoods can be revitalized and still retain a mix of housing and kinds of people...

Nice goal, but I wonder if it can be done.
