A pilot program could allow underground websurfing by early next year

Anyone who rides the Prague metro knows that as soon as the doors close and the train moves, you are cut off from phone calls and websurfing.
That may start to change. The four new stations on the A line between Bořislavka and Nemocnice Motol will be the first to get coverage in a pilot program. Based on the results, the coverage could be expanded.
An agreement between the association of mobile operators and the the Prague Public Transport Company (DPP) could be signed next week, and then negotiations with providers of the needed infrastructure would begin, news server iDnes.cz reported.
The service could be operational in four months. Implementation will take that long because new cables can only be installed at night when the metro is out of service.
Customers of all mobile services should be able to access the service.
Deputy Prague Mayor and Councilor for Transport Peter Dolínek (Social Democrats, ČSSD) said that the level of usage in the trial period would determine how much rent the mobile operators will pay the city. He also said he opposes the city paying for any of the installation. The costs, estimated to be in tens of thousands of crowns, will be covered by the mobile operators.
The next section to be covered would likely be on the metro C line between Muzeum and Roztyly. It is the busiest section of the metro line in terms of passengers. The costs for covering this section have not been disclosed, but will be higher than those for the four station on the metro A line due to the extended length.
The stations IP Pavlova and Muzeum were also the first to get mobile coverage in 1998.
Complete coverage of the metro system will likely take several years due to the limited hours for installation. Covering the entire system may cost up to half a billion crowns.
The metro C line is also in consideration to get ticket terminals that accept contactless cards.
