I agonized over writing a column about Donald Trump and his appearance in Phoenix for two reasons: I thought much of what needed to be said was already written; and as an Arizonan, I went to the event with a pre-conceived bias. But then I realized, I had not been let down in my projected read of the rally.

But Mexican authorities should realize by now that even successful police and military operations will not bring an end to the impunity that infects government institutions.
U.S.-Mexico relations are also in desperate need of "normalization." In order to best support the democratic development south of the Rio Grande, the U.S. should break with the silent pact of impunity with corrupt Mexican officials and open up the bilateral agenda to active bottom-up citizen participation.
The only things that really matter in Republican politics today are name recognition, a degree of celebrity, and the ability to make outrageous statements that appeal to a minority of voters.

When it comes to other important issues facing America, Trump speaks as a man who is never in doubt, although he is frequently wrong. For instance, he has claimed he has a plan to defeat the terrorist group ISIS, which now controls oil fields in Iraq.
Trump certainly acts and sounds like a racial bigot. But whether he really is or not, there is a much deeper issue here -- Donald Trump is a salesman who sees that racial bigotry still works with a core base of the Republican Party.
We are two first-generation undocumented immigrants from Mexico. We are the first members in our families to graduate from high school and attend college. Recently, you made statements referring to Mexican immigrants as criminals, rapists and drug dealers. We beg to differ.
As more and more corporations and businesses separate themselves from Trump because of his comments regarding Mexicans and immigrants, the Central Park Five and their families are likely thinking it's about time.
