Today we remember the five firefighters and construction worker that lost their lives when oil tanks exploded at Dudgeon’s Wharf on the Isle of Dogs.
Forty-six years ago today, firefighters Michael Gamble and Alfred Smee from Millwall Fire Station, John Appleby and Terrance Breen from Brunswick Road Fire Station and Paul Carvosso from Cannon Street Fire Station were called to the fire on the Thames.
Believing the fire had been put out by demolition workers, the firefighters ...

  • Jim Rogers Following my post yesterday, this morning I went to the LFB memorial on the bank of Thames where Dudgeons Wharf previously existed. Today it is a rather exclusive residential estate. I was fortunate enough to arrive in time to meet the local Brigade co...See More

It was a glorious summer day and a hive of activity. Then the place became empty as the ET that was at BA Drill was ordered on along with Southwark and the terrible news f

How safe are your sockets? A man was treated for smoke inhalation earlier this week after a fire at a house in New Eltham.
Fire investigators believe an overloaded plug socket caused the blaze, which left part of the ground floor damaged.
It’s tempting to plug lots of electrical equipment into one socket for ease, but they can quickly overheat and that can lead to serious fires.

From behind the bar to behind bars. It was a case of go to jail, go directly to jail for the former manager and leaseholder of the Prince of Wales pub on Finsbury Road in Wood Green. The pair were sentenced to six months in prison each for putting lives at risk by breaking fire safety laws. Disabled smoke alarms, inadequate fire detection and defective fire doors led one senior Brigade officer to describe the pub as a "death trap." On this day 10 years ago one of the UK’s leading DVD manufacturers was engulfed in flames. Fortunately all 200 members of staff safely evacuated from the building in Wembley and no-one was injured.
At its height 150 firefighters and 30 appliances tackled the blaze and clouds of thick black smoke could be seen across London’s skyline from as far away as 10 miles.
Local residents were advised to stay indoors because of toxic fumes and even construction of the new Wembley Stadium was temporarily brought to a standstill.

What can happen if you leave candles unattended for just a moment. Thankfully a woman got out with only minor smoke inhalation. Make sure you blow them out if you leave the room http://www.london-fire.gov.uk/LatestIncidentsContainer_1007…

Smoke from this fire in Rainham last week was visible for miles around. More than 80 firefighters battled for over five hours to bring it under control. Two cottages, an annexe flat and four vehicles fell victim to the blaze but a farmhouse that was under serious threat was saved after quick thinking crews aimed their jets at it to protect it from the fire.

This is Woody the Border Collie who has been getting his training partner, Wandsworth Borough Commander Darren Munro, into shape for the Gurkha Endurance Challenge - a 100km race across the South Downs National Park. The challenge on 25 July will raise funds for the Oxfam earthquake relief effort in Nepal. Darren said: “The total ascent is equal to Ben Nevis and Snowden combined so we've already conceded first place to the Gurkhas! Every bit of money we can raise though will go a small way to helping those most in need." You can sponsor Darren at https://www.justgiving.com/D-Munro/

  • Linda Mitchell Hey Darren, long time no see - Terry says where are you living now after leaving Horley? We are now down the coast near Littlehampton/Bognor. All the best for the 25th.
Woodford Fire Station is hosting a community safety day on Sunday 19th July. As well as the chance to meet Woodford firefighters, visitors can also look around the fire station and at the fire engine.
There will also be the opportunity to have a look at the specialist equipment carried on a Fire Rescue Unit and to watch an aerial appliance display its capabilities.
The event will also be attended by colleagues from the Metropolitan Police Service including their trained tea...
