A fire broke out at a luxury hotel on the Las Vegas Strip on Saturday, injuring one person and covering the Strip with thick plumes of black smoke, fire officials and witnesses said.
The Clark County Fire Department said on Twitter that it was fighting a two-alarm fire at 3708 South Las Vegas Blvd., the address of the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. The gleaming luxury hotel overlooks the main part of the Strip and attracts megawatt celebrities like Beyoncé and Jay Z, who stay in its posh three-story suites and come and go through its secret entrances and passageways.
The fire department said that one person, who was not immediately identified, had been taken to the hospital. There was no immediate information on how seriously the person was injured.
Brad Seidel, the hotel’s account director, said the fire broke out around 12:15 p.m. local time at the Bamboo Pool in the West End tower and was later contained and put out. The hotel was evacuated, and there were no serious injuries, he said in an email.
The cause of the fire was still under investigation, Mr. Seidel said.
Firefighters appeared to make quick work the blaze. Less than 15 minutes after posting a picture on Twitter of the flames and smoke rising from the hotel, Courtney Cyr, a guest at the nearby Aria Resort and Casino, posted another image of the charred remains it left behind.
Sandra Baker, a county spokeswoman, told The Las Vegas Sun that firefighters had extinguished the flames and were working to clear the smoke and check the adjoining tower to be sure the fire had not spread. Crews from Las Vegas Fire and Medical also responded to the fire.
The five-star hotel opened in 2010 and has nearly 3,000 rooms. This year, it was on Condé Nast’s Gold List of the best hotels in the world.
