It will be held Tuesday at 0930 hours at Faith Bible Chapel, 6250 Wright St. --the funeral service will be followed by a procession past Denver Fire Station 8 at 1616 Park Ave., to Mount Olivet Cemetery, 12801 W. 44th Ave. in Wheat Ridge. NOTE: The service and interment will not be open to the public, however all friends and uniformed first responders are welcome. Members of the public wishing to pay their respects are encouraged to line the processional route. He leaves behind his wife and young son.       Tweet   STRAY BULLET STRIKES FIREFIGHTERS HELMET AT WORKING FIRE SCENE  Sunday, July 19, 2015   Sunday is a reflective day at the District 3 firehouse in Cincinnati, hours after a firefighter was hit by a bullet in the helmet while battling a fire in Avondale. CFD Captain McWilliams acknowledged that shootings are always in the back of firefighters' minds as they do their job. "There are so many shootings going on," McWilliams said. "That thought is there. That possibility is always there. The areas that we work -- there's a lot of that going on." McWilliams said firefighters usually do feel safe doing their job. Whenever there is an incident, police officers go into the building first. That was not the case around midnight, when 55 firefighters responded to a structure fire in a vacant two-story building in the 500 block of Carplin Place. Shortly after their arrival, gunfire broke out in the area, grazing one firefighter's helmet and "narrowly missing several others," according to the fire department. [ more ]       Tweet   MEMORIAL HELD FOR FF KILLED IN CRASH  Sunday, July 19, 2015   A memorial was held Saturday at the Arcata Community Center for U.S. Forest Service firefighter Dale Alexander Mendes of Willow Creek.Family and friends were joined by firefighters and police from multiple agencies to pay tribute to Mendes. Mendes died in a traffic collision on July 9 after leaving work from the Salyer station. He and fellow firefighter Jason Fritz Price, Jr. were found in their vehicle submerged in the Trinity River near Kimtu Beach. On Saturday, the day started with a procession in Willow Creek off of Highway 96 and ended at the Arcata Community Center. Mendes' brother Jeremiah drove Dale's Forest Service pickup as it was escorted by the California Highway Patrol. During the memorial service, several people who knew Mendes from high school and work spoke about their favorite memory of him. [ more ]       Tweet   DRONES GROUND WILDFIRE AIRCRAFT AGAIN IN CA  Sunday, July 19, 2015   Of all the elements they must battle in a wildfire, firefighters face a new foe: drones operated by enthusiasts who presumably take close-up video of the disaster.Five such “unmanned aircraft systems” prevented California firefighters from dispatching helicopters with water buckets for up to 20 minutes over a wildfire that roared Friday onto a Los Angeles area freeway that leads to Las Vegas. Helicopters couldn’t drop water because five drones hovered over the blaze, creating hazards in smoky winds for a deadly midair disaster, officials said. The North Fire torched 20 vehicles on Interstate 15 and incited panic among motorists who fled on foot on the freeway Friday. The wildfire continued to burn uncontrollably Saturday, scorching 3,500 acres with only 5% containment in San Bernardino County, officials said. [ more ]       Tweet   APPARATUS ROLLOVER IN KUALA LUMPUR  Saturday, July 18, 2015   A firefighter sustained minor injuries after the fire engine he was traveling in overturned near Desa Tun Razak, this morning. During the 5.20am incident, the fire engine from Bandar Tun Razak fire station was rushing to an emergency fire location when it crashed into a road sign at a traffic light junction before the vehicle overturned. A Fire and Rescue spokesman said another vehicle from Hang Tuah fire station with eight firefighters was dispatched to the scene to rescue the victim within 15 minutes. The victim Masri Jamaluddin sustained minor injuries and has been sent to Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Hospital for treatment. Only a few vehicles at the scene when the incident occurred this morning.         Tweet   PENNSYLVANIA FIRE POLICE OFFICER DIES FOLLOWING STRUCTURE FIRE  Saturday, July 18, 2015    We regret to advise you that Fire Police Officer Melissa “Missy” Doll, 41, died in the Line of Duty on July 16, 2015.As a member of the Jefferson Volunteer Fire Department, Codorus, PA, Fire Police Officer Doll passed away from an apparent cardiac arrest on July 16 after responding to a mutual aid structure fire late the night before. RIP.       Tweet   MARYLAND PARAMEDIC / FIREFIGHTER SUCCUMBS  Saturday, July 18, 2015    It is with deep regret that we pass on the tragic death of Nick Hemingway. Nick was a Paramedic with Baltimore City FD and a volunteer FF with Bladensburg Co. 9 in Prince Georges County, MD. Nick was hospitalized after a Cardiac Arrest late Tuesday afternoon while at work, as a Paramedic with the Baltimore City Fire Department. He had been feeling ill throughout the day. No further details are available at this time. [ more ]       Tweet   FIREFIGHTER DIES IN THE LINE OF DUTY-SUCCUMBS TO INJURIES FOLLOWING FALL THRU SKYLIGHT AT FIRE SCENE  Thursday, July 16, 2015    We regret to pass on to you that the Denver Firefighter who fell through a skylight while fighting a fire on June 28 died in the Line of Duty from his injuries last night.John Whelan, a 15-year veteran of the department was taken to St. Anthony North Health Campus about 1945 hours with shortness of breath, according to a release from the Denver Fire Department. Whelan died less than an hour later after going into cardiac arrest. Whelan was at the scene of a dumpster fire that broke out near an abandoned building at 3860 Blake Street on June 28th. He was on the roof of the building checking for damage when the skylight collapsed. Whelan fell 20 feet and suffered several injuries including a broken arm, broken ribs and internal injuries. More details will follow as a press conference is scheduled for this morning outside Denver Fire Headquarters. Our condolences to all those affected. RIP.       Tweet   CLOSE CALL IN IOWA - SEMI FIRE FULL OF PROPANE TANKS!  Wednesday, July 15, 2015   A semi trailer and its load of filled propane tanks was destroyed in a fire on Monday, July 13, 2015 near Carmel. According to Rock Valley Fire Chief John Wallenburg, about 6:00 PM, the Rock Valley Fire Department was called to the report of semi fire about a half mile east of Eagle Avenue on B30, or about three and a half miles west of Carmel.The chief says the fire department saw the fire from a long way away as they approached the scene. They found a semi with a trailer full of filled 20 and 40-pound propane tanks, similar to the ones used for grills and forklifts. He says by the time they got there, some of the over 200 tanks were already exploding. Wallenburg says the 40-pound aluminum tanks were the most dangerous, as they tended to shatter, sending shrapnel several feet away at high speed. The smaller 20-pound steel tanks either released their gas from the release valve or exploded by blowing the top off the tank. He says they used lots of water to fight the... [ more ]       Tweet   Drone Grounds Tanker Flights Over California Wildfire  Monday, July 13, 2015    Authorities briefly grounded air tankers that were fighting a wildfire in Southern California on Sunday after a drone flew close to the blaze. The planes fighting a 35-acre fire on the edge of the San Bernardino National Forest were grounded for about eight minutes until the drone left the area, U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Carol Underhill said. "That may not seem like a huge amount of time, but in a fire emergency every minute counts," Underhill said. more ]       Tweet   PG Co MD FF INJURED AT TOWNHOUSE FIRE  Monday, July 13, 2015   Shortly after 7:00 PM, Sunday, July 12, firefighters and paramedics from the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services (HCDFRS) were alerted by neighbors about a townhouse fire in the 9400 block of Riverbrink Court in Laurel, Maryland. Several neighbors called 911 to report seeing smoke and flames coming from the basement at the rear of the structure. Crews arrived to find heavy fire coming from the rear of a 2-story end-unit townhouse with a walk out basement. More than 50 firefighters from HCDFRS and the Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department (PGFD) were on hand to extinguish the blaze. PGFD units included Laurel #810, Calverton #841, a Medic Unit from Laurel and several command officers. It is common practice for neighboring jurisdictions to share mutual aid fire/EMS apparatus if they are closest to the incident location.
