The planes fighting a 35-acre fire on the edge of the San Bernardino National Forest were grounded for about eight minutes until the drone left the area, U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Carol Underhill said. "That may not seem like a huge amount of time, but in a fire emergency every minute counts," Underhill said. more ]         PG Co MD FF INJURED AT TOWNHOUSE FIRE Monday, July 13, 2015  Shortly after 7:00 PM, Sunday, July 12, firefighters and paramedics from the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services (HCDFRS) were alerted by neighbors about a townhouse fire in the 9400 block of Riverbrink Court in Laurel, Maryland. Several neighbors called 911 to report seeing smoke and flames coming from the basement at the rear of the structure. Crews arrived to find heavy fire coming from the rear of a 2-story end-unit townhouse with a walk out basement. More than 50 firefighters from HCDFRS and the Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department (PGFD) were on hand to extinguish the blaze. PGFD units included Laurel #810, Calverton #841, a Medic Unit from Laurel and several command officers. It is common practice for neighboring jurisdictions to share mutual aid fire/EMS apparatus if they are closest to the incident location. [ more ]         5 US FOREST SERVICE FFs HURT IN ROLLOVER CRASH ABC30 Video Monday, July 13, 2015  Action News is learning new information about five U.S. Forest Service firefighters and a sixth person injured in a rollover crash near Clovis. The California Highway Patrol said the crash happened around 7:30 Sunday morning on Highway 168 between Shepherd and Academy avenues. Firefighters Derek Soden, 29, of Mariposa, and Lee Sands, 37, of Groveland, are at Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno. The CHP isn't releasing the full extent of their injuries but says this major crash could've been avoided. A massive Forest Service rig is likely totaled, the CHP said, after rolling four times and smashing into an open field. Video shows Action Towing pulling the fire truck away shortly after firefighters were rushed to the hospital. "The collision sent both vehicles out of control; both vehicles rolled -- one on the south side of 168 and one on the north side of 168," said CHP Sgt. Joseph Bianchi. [ more ]         5 YONKERS FFs INJURED AT APARTMENT FIRE Monday, July 13, 2015  A fire that started in the first floor of a multifamily home in Yonkers has left 15 people displaces Sunday morning, according to Yonkers Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Fore. The heavy fire, at 19 Knowles Street, began around 5 a.m. in the rear of the three-story, wood-frame building, Yonkers Ford said, and spread to the upper floors of the three-story home. First arriving companies found heavy fire in the rear of the building with the fire running up the rear stair case from the first floor to the third floor and extending into the cockloft, Ford said. The fire went to a second alarm which brought roughly 50 firefighters to the scene. All companies made an aggressive attack from the interior and had the fire under control in roughly one hour. Five firefighters were treated for minor injuries, and one resident was transported to St Joseph's Medical Center for difficulty breathing. [ more ]         ENGINE STRUCK AT CA BRUSH FIRE Monday, July 13, 2015   A firefighter responding to a vegetation fire Saturday morning was injured after the fire engine he was standing near was struck by a driver in a large pickup truck.Woodbridge Fire Engine 74 was called out to a fire near the southbound on-ramp from Highway 12 to southbound Interstate 5 at about 11:40 a.m., Woodbridge Fire Lt. Dan Schmierer said.A firefighter, whose name was not released, was outside toward the rear of the engine when a 33-year-old man in a Chevy dually pickup truck — a truck with double tires in the back — crashed into the fire engine, which was stopped on the on-ramp, said officer Dan Sepulveda, a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol. The impact knocked the firefighter down an embankment.It is not believed that he was hit directly by either vehicle, but possibly debris, Sepulveda said. [ more ]         FOOD TRUCK EXPLODES IN NC - INJURING FF Sunday, July 12, 2015   A firefighter was taken to the hospital Saturday after he was knocked to the ground following a food truck explosion in a Greensboro strip mall.The unidentified firefighter was taken to Moses Cone Hospital, said Battalion Chief Danny Edwards with the Greensboro Fire Department. Firefighters were called to 2309 Fleming Road at 5:05 p.m. for a report of a food truck on fire. When firefighters arrived, they found the food truck and SUV engulfed. A cylinder in the food truck ruptured causing the explosion that knocked the firefighter down, Edwards said. The food truck, Tom Got Crabs, was heavily damaged in the blaze. It wasn’t immediately clear if the food truck had been operating out of the strip mall or had just been parked there at the time. Edwards said the cause of the fire is under investigation. DIES AFTER HEAD ON CA CRASH Sunday, July 12, 2015  An ambulance carrying a patient crashed head-on with a car in Pasadena, California, on Saturday, killing the patient and injuring three other people, police said. The collision took place about 4 p.m. on Fair Oaks Avenue near Mountain Street, officials with the Pasadena Police Department said. 10-Month-Old Dies After Being Hit by Car Driving From a Shooting The ambulance patient, a man in his 70s, suffered a head injury in the collision and went into cardiac arrest, police said. He was taken to the hospital, where he died a short time later. "We don't know exactly what happened inside the cabin of that ambulance that led to that serious injury," Pasadena police Lt. Jesse Carrillo said.Prior to the crash, the patient was being taken to the hospital for a non-emergency medical appointment, Carrillo said. Using four years of state crash data, as well as self-reported numbers from 24 Collier and Lee police, EMS and fire agencies, the Daily News is examining how often local emergency responders are involved in crashes (more than four times per week) and how often they are at least partially to blame for distracted driving wrecks (more than once a month).         FIREFIGHTER LODD REPORT DOWNLOAD: Report reveals factors of Baltimore firefighter's death CBS Baltimore Video Saturday, July 11, 2015  The need for an improved accountability system is among key findings in the final report on the death last year of a longtime member of the Baltimore City Fire Department. City fire officials held a news conference Friday to release its investigative findings into how Lt. James Bethea died. Chief Niles R. Ford called the report the most comprehensive line-of-duty-death report in his more than 24 years on the job. “Our goal was to find out what happened to ensure it doesn’t happen again,” said Ford, who added that he has already shared the findings of the report with Bethea’s family. An eight-person panel of fire experts from Howard and Anne Arundel counties and Baltimore City compiled the report. That firefighter was trapped. Minute by minute, he tried not to panic while he waited, but with every breath came some reassurance. "With this he didn't run out of air. Without this, he would have run out of air," Major Dalrymple explained while pointing at one of their new air tanks. He showed WAVE 3 News exclusively what makes the tanks a life-saving upgrade. He explained how they hold double the air, extending a firefighter's time from 20 minutes to 45. Louisville's fire department has been testing them out for the past few months. They now have 374 new packs, enough for the entire department and their recruits. The new tanks are smaller, but weigh about the same. [ more ]         ARKANSAS FFs CAUGHT IN BACKDRAFT KSLA News 12 Shreveport, Louisiana News Weather KSLA Video Friday, July 10, 2015 A Texarkana mother and baby are safe after their house caught fire and exploded just after 10 p.m. Wednesday.When the Texarkana Fire Department arrived at home in the 2000 block of Pearl Street, they found smoke coming from the attic space of the residence. Firefighters say Tasha Pool and her 18-month-old child were asleep inside the house when neighbors began beating on her door, telling her the house was on fire. Both the mother and child escaped the home before fire crews arrived. As firefighters entered the house, a backdraft blew out the insulation from the house.         WI FIRE CHIEF FRUSTRATED AFTER SHOOTING OF FIREFIGHTER Wednesday, July 8, 2015  Milwaukee's fire chief is encouraging people to put their guns down after a firefighter was shot early Monday.Chief Mark Rohlfing said the firefighter who suffered a bullet graze wound to the head while responding to a medical call didn't realized he had been injured until after he took care of his patient. "I and everyone on the department are deeply concerned and rather angered that someone would shoot at a scene where our firefighters are rending care," Rohlfing said. Authorities said the first responders were called to help a person who was having trouble breathing. Milwaukee Fire Department personnel were turning a person's care over to a Curtis Ambulance crew when shots were fired. Rohlfing said Tuesday the firefighter felt blood on the side of his head after treating the patient and only then realized he had been wounded by someone shooting at the ambulance. The crash happened near the intersection of Charles City Road and Airport Road. Police have not yet released information about the conditions of the drivers.          CT FF BURNED AT DUMPSTER FIRE Wednesday, July 8, 2015  A firefighter was injured last week in a dumpster fire that extended to the loading dock of a Round Hill Road business, Fairfield fire officials said. The firefighter suffered a burn on his left hand after falling into the dumpster, which was heated by a fire at the Heim Bearing Co. on Tuesday, June 30, according to fire officials. Officials said the pattern of fire development pointed to an ignition area inside the dumpster, which contained wood pallets, cardboard and plastic wrap. The dumpster was touching the loading dock and heat transfer caused the padding surrounding the overhead doors to ignite, fire officials said. Smoke traveled into the main building until an employee closed the manually operated fire door. An employee activated the fire alarm and the building was safely evacuated, fire officials said.
