FDNY HOLDS GRADUATION AND PROMOTION CEREMONY FOR EMS MEMBERS
On July 1, the FDNY welcomed 118 new Emergency Medical Technicians into its ranks, and promoted 22 Lieutenants and 9 Chiefs.

"Our members raise the bar for how patients must be cared for, and there is no job - no call - that FDNY EMTs, Paramedics and Officers cannot respond to and handle with the utmost professionalism, compassion and dignity," said Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro.

Among the newly promoted Chiefs was Janice Olszewski, promoted to Deputy Assistant Chief - the first female two-star Chief in the history of the Department.
" Each of our Chiefs has put their heart and soul into serving
 this city, each brings an impressive resume to the table and a lifetime of helping patients at their most difficult times," said Chief of Department James E. Leonard.  "They have risen far in this Department because of their unwavering commitment to our life-saving mission."

Dr. Bradley Kaufman of the FDNY’s Bureau of Health Services led the new class of EMTs in the Oath of Geneva, telling the new EMTs that they are part of a medical community that has been saving lives for thousands of years.

"It is an honor and privilege to care for another individual in their most trying moments," said Dr. Kaufman."

New EMT Kimberly Werner, praised her instructors at the Academy.
"The whole staff at the academy was great. Training was a lot of hard work, but it was exciting, I would do it all again."

EMT Werner’s sister, Kristine is also an EMT, and their mother is Deputy Chief Denise Werner.
"I know she's going to be a great asset to the Department," said Chief Werner.

Commissioner Nigro praised all of the graduates and promotes celebrated at the ceremony.

"The FDNY has a storied history, and with the tremendous work you will do going forward, you will help us write many more new, successful chapters. No matter your new roles, you are all a critical part of our Department, and you represent the very best this city has to offer."
