The Bureau of Fire Investigation
BFI conducts investigations of all complex, fatal and suspicious fires within the City of New York to expertly determine their origin and cause. In 2010, BFI investigated 6,639 cases throughout the five boroughs; of these, Fire Marshals determined 2241 to be incendiary, making 560 arrests. Explore BFI's History and Mission.
Juvenile Fire-Setters Intervention Program
While curiosity about fire is common, some children light fires for other reasons. If you suspect a child is playing with fire or is setting fires intentionally, you can get help by contacting the FDNY's Bureau of Fire Investigation. This program offers both education and evaluations for children who are engaging in fire play. How you can get help.
