Darbee sat in the captain’s chair in the back of the rig, typing on a laptop. Then he heard a sound no paramedic ever wants to hear: the click of a patient’s shoulder harness unlatching. Swiveling around, he found himself eyeball to eyeball with his patient, who was now crouched on all fours on top of the stretcher, growling.
Cheap, unpredictable and hard to regulate, synthetic marijuana has emergency responders scrambling to save lives.

Treatment Options for Hypoglycemia: Should It Be Gluca-gone? "Because of the increasing price of glucagon, approximately $400 per 1 mg vial, I was asked if we could remove it from the rigs. Providers told me they 'never use it' and 'it always just expires.' So I began some research into the frequency of glucagon use in the field and investigated other options. I was surprised by some of my findings."—Peter Taillac, MD, FACEP www.emsworld.com/12088846

Summertime temps can be deadly for the elderly, so two big thumbs up for the Ft. Worth firefighters who, after their shift ended, helped install an AC unit in an elderly man's house who had previously called for help after becoming ill due to the overwhelming heat in his house. Does your agency do welfare checks when temperatures reach triple digits?
Firefighters from Station 12 installed an air conditioner, purchased by Fort Worth Firefighter Charities, for an elderly man.

Jeff van Pelt, president of the CUPE Ambulance Committee of Ontario, says the firefighters’ proposal “is about protecting their own jobs” amid a drop in fire-related calls. “If this was about patient care,” van Pelt says, firefighters “would be advocating to the politicians to increase EMS money, increase hospital money.”

This month's CE article reviews prehospital stabilization of unstable neonates. The mnemonic NEO SECRETS is a helpful list of differential diagnoses that cause instability in the neonate. After providing initial stabilization for a critically ill neonate, seek to identify the underlying problem. Failure to rule in, or out, underlying problems can lead to the neonate deteriorating or ultimately their demise. See www.emsworld.com/12088865.

Each year, families, friends and coworkers from around the nation come together during this Weekend of Tribute. This weekend of events not only recognizes and honors their sacrifice, but also provides support to the loved ones who are left behind. The event, held in Colorado, features an Air Medical Remembrance Ceremony, a Memorial Bike Ride and the National EMS Memorial Service. The Service is a formal ceremony to pay tribute to those EMS professionals who have given their lives in the line of duty. County regulators ordered the Compton Fire Department to remove the devices last week after fire officials were unable to produce documentation showing firefighters had been properly trained to use the equipment. Compton Fire Chief Jon Thompson said that on most 911 calls, paramedics, who continue to carry defibrillators, are dispatched with lower-skilled firefighters. "It doesn't put us in any danger," Thompson said. He noted that while Compton rescue units have long had defibrillators, state law does not require firefighters to carry them. "It's not a mandatory program. It's something that we would like to have."
