CFK praises US decision to allow Argentine beef imports
President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner.
President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner has welcomed the decision by the United States Department of Agriculture to amend its regulations and allow fresh beef into the country from Brazil and Argentina.
“Our world is not an ideological world anymore. It is a world made of interests, and we have to understand our interests. I don’t own any lands, but I fight as a rancher for our interests, our people,” Ms Kirchner said during a televised speech from Government’s House.
The change in US regulation could open the door to further export opportunities, officials said yesterday. The Kirchnerite administration stated US$280 million per year in new exports could be clinched very quickly.
Speaking about Argentine agricultural policies, the head of state said sometimes the federal government has to defend opposition sectors from themselves, remembering the conflict over the 125 export tax law.
“The worst thing that could happen to a country is that its president does not protect them. And sometimes the president needs to protect people form themselves. Because people sometimes have prejudices, ideas that were put into their heads by special interests,” CFK said indirectly questioning opposition media coverage of the 2008 controversy.
Ms Kirchner also made several announcements on public education and production initiatives, and remembered the anniversary of the decease of President Juan Domingo Perón.
