STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The FDNY is responding to a gas leak with no injuries at Front and Thompson streets in Stapleton on Thursday morning.

Front street is blocked near the scene and a witness said there is a strong odor of gas in the area. National Grid also is on the scene.

A contractor broke through a 2-inch, high-pressure plastic gas line, according to an FDNY source at the scene, although a spokesman for the department said the cause is under investigation.

An FDNY spokesman said no one was injured in the leak that has been contained.
