Dear Friend,
Â
I want to give you a quick update about where things stand on renewing the rent regulation laws. Unfortunately my legislative colleagues and I have yet to resolve our differences and reach a long term agreement. However, last night we passed a 5-day retroactive extender of the law, which means that regulations, including the coop/condo abatement, remain in effect until Tuesday. This gives us more time to continue negotiating for stronger protections without causing more unnecessary worry for tenants.
Â
As I have said before, there is no reason to panic about a short-term expiration of the laws – it will have no immediate impact on tenants. If you feel that your landlord is trying to take advantage of the current uncertainty, please call my office at 212-490-9535, or the Public Advocate’s Tenant Hotline at 212-669-7250.
Â
In the meantime, please continue your calls and emails demanding the governor and the legislature not only renew, but strengthen these vital laws. For more information on advocacy efforts, you can contact the Alliance for Tenant Power at 212-608-4320, or the Metropolitan Council on Housing at 212-979-6238. To contact Governor Cuomo, call 518-474-8390 or email him using the following link: https://www.governor.ny.gov/contact.
Â
Sincerely,
Â
Liz Krueger
State Senator
