Jakarta Tackles Part of Its Housing Problem- Jakarta Post

Greater Jakarta: City to
build integrated apartments
in 2016

Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama said that the city administration would start constructing 12 low-cost apartment blocks integrated with traditional marketplaces across the capital city in 2016 for low-income residents.

Ahok said the construction will take place in Pasar Rumput and Pasar Minggu in South Jakarta, Pasar Sunter, Pasar Sukapura and Pasar Sindang in North Jakarta, Pasar Cempaka Putih, Pasar Lontar Kebon Melati, Pasar Blok G in Tanah Abang and Pasar Serdang in Central Jakarta, Pasar Jembatan Besi, Pasar Jelambar Polri and Pasar Grogol in West Jakarta.

He added that the construction could not start soon because there was no governmental regulation that would allow the administration to build such mixed-use high rise residences. Such a regulation, he said, has been provided for the private sector.

“If private companies are allowed to build a mixed-use [apartment], why can’t we?” he asked on Tuesday as quoted by kompas.com.

He said many private companies built apartments with malls or shopping centers underneath, such as the Agung Podomoro Group that built the Seasons City Apartments and Central Park in West Jakarta and the Ciputra Group that built the Taman Anggrek Mall in West Jakarta and Lotte Shopping Avenue in South Jakarta.

He was convinced that the middle-upper-class concept could be adopted for lower-middle-class residents.

“People who have both house and workplace will prosper. Such a residential facility is a form of subsidy for the residents,” he said.
