Michael Miller was found dead at a station house early Saturday morning.A press released indicated that Miller passed away in his sleep at approximately 4 a.m. while working his shift. Green Bay Fire Department spokesman Lt. Nick Craig said Miller, 45, was an 18-year veteran of the department. International Association of Fire Fighters Local 141 President Chad Bronkhorst confirmed Miller's death, but wouldn't comment Saturday afternoon. A Facebook post on the Green Bay Metro Fire Fighters page indicated firefighters discovered an unresponsive Miller early Saturday while he was at Station 3, 885 Shawano Ave. "Lt. Miller was always one to put others in front of himself, both as a firefighter and a Paramedic and used his witty humor to put a smile on any face," the post reads. [ more ]         FIRE CHIEF STRUCK ON THE HIGHWAY IN MI ClickOnDetroit Video Saturday, June 20, 2015  The Green Oak Township fire chief was struck by a vehicle Friday afternoon on northbound US-23 at 9 Mile Road (M-36).Chief Kevin Gentry was out assisting an accident when he was struck by a vehicle on highway. The Green Oak Township Fire Department says the chief suffered minor injuries and will be held overnight at the hospital. No other injuries have been reported. Gentry has been the township's fire chief for two weeks. The northbound US-23 lanes were temporarily closed but have since reopened.         MI DEPT. TO ADD RUMBLER SIRENS TO RIGS Saturday, June 20, 2015   Four people were hospitalized Wednesday evening after the ambulance they were riding in was involved in a crash in Holland and rolled onto its side.The driver of the pickup truck that struck the AMR ambulance at the intersection of US-31 and 32nd Street told authorities he didn’t see or hear the ambulance coming, even though is lights and siren were activated because it was rushing a patient to the hospital. The crash illustrates a common danger for emergency responders. [ more ]         6 FFs INJURED AT CT HOUSE FIRE Friday, June 19, 2015  Six firefighters were sent to Saint Mary's Hospital after fire broke out at a Waterbury home on Thursday morning. Around 10 a.m., crews responded to the fire at 768 Pearl Lake Road and Battalion Chief Bob Stoeckert said the firefighters were putting on masks and getting ready to go inside when fire was blown down on them. Some of the firefighters suffered minor burns and others were treated for heat exhaustion, but none of the injuries are life-threatening. Some will be returning to work, but others are being placed off duty. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but authorities said it started toward the back of the home, which is now uninhabitable. Joe Cegelka, a neighbor, rushed home after his wife heard the fire start and called him. "I understand, from what my wife told me, it started in the garage and there was some cars stored back there. That's all I know," he said.          Firefighter agency calls policy shift 'catastrophe waiting to happen' Friday, June 19, 2015  A group that represents wildland firefighters believes a policy change at the highest levels of government could lead to slower response times for fires at national parks."It's a catastrophe waiting to happen," said the Casey Judd, president of the Federal Wildlife Fire Service Organization. Team 10 first reported on the policy change last week after hearing from multiple sources that on-duty chiefs for the U.S. Forest Service could no longer take their duty vehicles home. Sources claim not having those command vehicles and the radios inside them means fire chiefs will take up to an hour longer to respond to fires, jeopardizing public safety. Judd told Team 10 this is a huge problem across the state of California, especially in Southern California's Cleveland National Forest. [ more ]         STUDY CONFIRMS AUSTRALIAN FF CANCER CLUSTER Country Fire Authority firefighters       training at Fiskville in 1979. A Monash       University study has found a cancer       cluster among those who worked at the       facility full-time and were exposed to       flammable chemicals, combustion, foams       and recycled firewater. Friday, June 19, 2015  Firefighters who worked at a Country Fire Authority facility in Victoria’s Ballarat region have a higher incidence of skin, testicular and brain cancers, a comprehensive study has found.The study, conducted by Monash University, examined cancer and death rates linked to the Fiskville site between 1971 and 1999. It found 69 cancers were among the 606 people who worked and trained there, resulting in 16 deaths. Releasing the findings on Wednesday, the Victorian premier, Daniel Andrews, told reporters the research confirmed “beyond any reasonable doubt” that there was a statistically significant increase in cancers associated with firefighters who worked at the site. “This is a very tragic report,” he said. “The evidence is becoming clearer and clearer each day that people have become sick because of this place. MAN NOW SPENDING TIME WITH THE COPS Thursday, June 18, 2015  A Toledo man is hospitalized today after he tried to get into an ambulance while only in his underwear and then assaulted two firefighters at a fire station in West Toledo, authorities said. Toledo police Lt. Dan Gerken said Bradford Lewis, 35, of Nash Road, was shocked with a Taser during an attempt by police and firefighters to subdue him. Mr. Lewis was then taken to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center, where his condition was unavailable, Lieutenant Gerken said. Mr. Lewis is charged with aggravated burglary, two counts of assault on an officer, and resisting arrest, he said. Mr. Lewis is under police supervision. Toledo Acting Fire Chief Karen Marquardt said Mr. Lewis tried to get into an ambulance at about 5 a.m. at Fire Station 23 on West Laskey Road near Douglas Road , at which time two firefighters in the vehicle resisted his attempt. [ more ]         FIREFIGHTER WHO TRIGGERED DEADLY CRASH WILL STAND TRIAL Thursday, June 18, 2015  An Australian Firefighter who did a U-turn in a tanker on a motorway triggering a fatal crash has been committed to stand trial for dangerous driving causing death. Rural Fire Service volunteer Firefighter Ian Jeffrey Wells was driving on the F3, north of Sydney, on October 18, 2012 when he performed a U-turn and collided with a Toyota Corolla which was then struck by a Mazda. Katina Mihailidis, 64, who was a passenger in the Corolla being driven by her husband Peter, then 73, was killed when the Mazda slammed into her side of the vehicle. Mr Mihailidis was taken to hospital with serious injuries. Wells and his passenger Paul Barwick said they saw Mr Mihailidis' flash his high beam at them as they slowed to make the U-turn and presumed it indicated that he was letting them in front. [ more ]         FIRE DISPATCH CENTER HIT WITH TEN FIRE CODE VIOLATIONS FOLLOWING DISPATCH SYSTEM FAILURE Thursday, June 18, 2015  A county-wide 911 system crash in Clermont County (Ohio) led to a fire marshal's investigation into multiple fire code violations at the county's 911 dispatch center. County officials are under a strict deadline to comply with the state's fire code or potentially face charges.Last Friday at 4:30 p.m., dispatchers and fire responders were unable to use the county's radio system after temperatures inside the communication tower building reached 148 degrees. The air conditioning system inside the building, which keeps the radio systems cool, quit working. The county did not have a monitoring system in place, which would have detected an increase in temperatures. The two HVAC units that were in place to back up an HVAC failure were not working, according to Central Joint Fire-EMS District Chief Kevin Riley. It took the county until 4:48 p.m. to get the 911 system back online, which Riley told FOX19, put all public safety workers at risk. "This radio system is every... The inmates both had been convicted of murder. Neither have been found yet and the story will make quite a movie. The fire was brought largely under control by 4:30pm. Several crews, including Boston Ladder 13 and Engines 22 and 32, remained on scene performing overhaul and cleanup. At 5:28pm, abruptly and without warning, all five floors of a 40 by 45 foot section at the southeast corner of the building collapsed, burying a ladder truck and 17 firefighters beneath a two-story pile of debris. [ more ]   PRISON SENTENCES IN THE DEATH OF 10 FIREFIGHTERS Wednesday, June 17, 2015   A former executive was sentenced yesterday to nearly 13 years in prison after admitting he provided false performance specifications to win a firefighting contract for a helicopter that crashed on a 2008 forest fire in California, killing seven firefighters and two pilots.The deaths rank as the worst toll of working firefighters in a helicopter crash in U.S. history. In passing sentence in U.S. District Court, Judge Ann Aiken scolded former Carson Helicopters vice president Steven Metheny for breaking every oath he had ever taken, from his time as an Eagle Scout growing up in Connecticut, to being a helicopter pilot for the National Guard in Connecticut and Oregon. “In the end, you betrayed all your friends and family and the oaths you have taken,” she told Metheny, 45. “If you had been found out and no one died, I would impose the same sentence.” Metheny had pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud, as well as making false st...
