MAYDAY IN MUSKEGEON MI

Thursday, June 11, 2015  Two Muskegon firefighters sent a rare "mayday" distress call while fighting a basement blaze on Wednesday, June 10 at a home on East Grand Avenue.Muskegon Fire Battalion Chief Gordon Cole said the two men did not suffer injuries. Only one male resident was inside the two-story home at the time of the fire, but he exited with assistance and without injury.

Firefighters arrived at the home at 5:58 p.m. responding to a basement fire. A five-man crew quickly entered, two of which headed for the basement.

As the two men worked to extinguish the fire, the three firefighters on the first floor reported flames coming up the vents.

"I knew at that point the fire had gotten behind them," Cole said. "I told them to pull back and that's when they made the mayday call."

The two were able to make it out safely, even after Cole called for backup from Norton Shores and Muskegon Heights fire crews.

INDIANA RESPONDING QUINT CRASH

Thursday, June 11, 2015  A crash Monday afternoon involving a Burns Harbor Fire Department truck was caused by a second driver, according to police.A crash report released Tuesday by the Portage Police Department said Cindy Tully, 56, of Portage, was driving a 2009 Chevrolet Aveo northbound on the Willocreek Road Bypass when she failed to maneuver a curve and crossed the center line, striking the fire department's ladder truck.

According to the report, Burns Harbor firefighter Roy Wesley was driving the ladder truck under the posted speed limit and attempted to steer out of the path of the Aveo, even sounding his air horn, but could not avoid the collision.

Tully was transported to Methodist Hospitals Northlake campus. Her condition is unknown.

The Burns Harbor Fire Department was responding to Portage to fill in at one of the city's stations while Portage firefighters battled a house fire on Stone Avenue.

VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENTS NEEDED FOR STUDY

Wednesday, June 10, 2015  Scientists from University of Texas Health Sciences Center’s School of Public Health and the Center for Fire, Rescue & EMS Health Research at the National Development & Research Institutes are looking for volunteer or mostly volunteer fire departments to participate in the test of an online wellness program for volunteer Firefighters.  The project, funded by FEMA’s Research and Development grants, will study the usefulness and acceptability of the program with departments across the country.
For this study, they are looking for departments that do not currently have an active wellness program, but are interested in adopting a department-wide program.  If selected, the project team will make two or three visits to your department to examine important health factors such as nutrition, exercise, and body composition in a sample of your firefighters.  Participants will then have access to an online program that focuses on changing diet, inc... TWO FIREFIGHTERS DIE IN THE LINE OF DUTY-MEDICAL

Wednesday, June 10, 2015  PENNSYLVANIA:Firefighter Wille O. Sensenich  69, of the North Huntingdon Township Circleville Volunteer Fire Department Station #8 who died in the Line of Duty on June 8, 2015.
Firefighter Sensenich, a highly respected and extremely active member of his department, died from apparent cardiac arrest several hours after responding to an electrical fire in a residential structure.

Firefighter Thomas D. Miserendino, 71, of the Beachwood Vol. Fire Company #1 in New Jersey on May 25, 2015.
Firefighter Miserendino arrived at the firehouse on May 25th in uniform to participate in the fire department's annual Memorial Day Ceremony & Parade.  Miserendino officiated over the memorial services at the fire station and then drove fire apparatus in the parade across town where he was scheduled to perform memorial duties during the town's official ceremony at a local veteran's park.  Shortly after his arrival at the town... INDIANA FIRE SUV T-BONED BY SEMI WHO RAN STOP SIGN

Tuesday, June 9, 2015  No injuries Tuesday morning after a fire command vehicle was t-boned by a semi in St. Joseph County.This happened on Kern Road and State Road 331.

Police tell our photographer a southbound semi disregarded the four-way stop at the intersection and t-boned a Penn Fire Command truck heading westbound on Kern.

No one was injured.
       

 

MULTIPLE FIREFIGHTERS DEAD IN THE UKRAINE, OTHER FIREFIGHTERS MISSING

Tuesday, June 9, 2015   At least 4 Firefighters were killed in the Line of Duty and other Firefighters are reported missing this morning in the Ukrainian* capital of Kiev after an explosion occurred while the firefighters were operating at an initial fire at an oil storage facility. Reports are that at least 180 Firefighters were at the scene dealing with the 17 tanks were on fire at the facility. One of the below videos shows firefighters operating before the explosion, one shows operations after and another shows a drone view of the incident.

WILDLAND FIREFIGHTER LODD DURING PHYSICAL TESTING

Tuesday, June 9, 2015  We regret to pass on to you that Ian Haxton, 31, a Veteran Fire Corps Crewmember
died in the Line of Duty on 6-6-2015. He was a part of the Student Conservation Association - Veteran Fire Corps based in Virginia. His death occurred in the Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge in Sasabe, AZ
Haxton suffered a medical emergency and collapsed 200 yards from the finish line while participating in the Wildland Firefighter Work Capacity Test. Medical care was immediately rendered by local emergency medical responders who had been staged on-site for the test. Crewmember Haxton was transported to an Advanced Care Facility where he passed away from a nature and cause of injury still to be determined. At the time of the fatal incident, Haxton was serving at the Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge in Sasabe, AZ, preparing for a series of prescribed burns scheduled to take place at the Refuge.

FIREFIGHTER LINE OF DUTY DEATH FUNERAL DETAILS ANNOUNCED

Tuesday, June 9, 2015   Funeral arrangements are set for an Ohio Fire Officer, Lt David Knapke, who died in the Line of Duty after collapsing at a house fire.

VISITATION:
For Lt. David Knapke, 55, will be held Thursday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Clear Mount Community Church in Batavia.
FUNERAL:
The funeral will be held at the church Friday at 10 a.m. with firefighter honors. The church is located at 4050 Tollgate Road in Batavia.


As you know, Lt Knapke collapsed while on duty last weekend. He was taken off life support and moved to hospice Friday. An MRI scan, among other treatment and tests, revealed brain damage incompatible with Knapke's wishes for life. His family, in accordance with Knapke's wishes, then decided to stop all life-supporting measures and he later passed away. RIP.

Tuesday, June 9, 2015   The London Professional Fire Fighters Association, partnering with the London FD and Fanshawe College are proud to release " Beyond The Call ", a video currently used as a training tool for our members and now released to the public and other Firefighters, EMT's and Cops to help understand and identify the dangers of PTSD.

Their goal in producing this video was to highlight and educate the many dangers faced by the fire service and to support ALL FIREFIGHTERS and other EMS and police personnel suffering with PTSD and to prevent others from suffering alone and in silence beyond the call.
Last week at the Ontario Professional Fire Fighters Association Convention in Ottawa, was the first large premier of the video. We encourage all departments to use this video to start a dialog with your members.

FL FF/MEDIC SUSPENDED FOR CELL PHONE USE WHILE DRIVING EMERGENT

Monday, June 8, 2015  An Orange Co FL firefighter/paramedic was caught on camera racing to an emergency call while on his cellphone, 9 Investigates learned.
It’s against county policy for all employees to use a cellphone while driving. Orange County firefighter Gary Stone nearly caused a crash that could’ve killed an innocent, unsuspecting driver, according to investigative reporter Daralene Jones
Jones uncovered the fact that it's the second time this year Stone was caught using a cellphone behind the wheel.9 Investigates requested a copy of the video, which was obtained a few days ago. In the video, you can see Stone racing to an emergency call, driving a fire rescue truck. His alert partner helps avoid a crash at nearly 60 mph.
Stone can be heard apologizing for the near-crash that put his partner and an innocent driver in danger.
“I did not see him, did not see him. Sorry,” Stone tells his partner.

IL FFs RESCUE FF WHO FELL THROUGH FLOOR

Monday, June 8, 2015  A firefighter who fell through the floor of a burning home Sunday in Naperville suffered only minor injuries as his fellow firefighters rushed to his aid to get him out of the building, according to a release from the Naperville Fire Department.
The fire at a one-story, wood-frame home in the 7S600 block of Olesen Drive was reported at 9:55 a.m.. the release said. Firefighters arrived at about 10:02 and found smoke coming from the chimney and roof area of the home, with the fire at the rear of the structure, it said.

Crews entered through the front door to fight the fire and search for occupants, and at 10:19, it was reported one firefighter had fallen through the floor into the basement, the release said. By 10:23, the firefighter had been rescued and brought to an ambulance, the release said, and he was treated and released at Edward Hospital in Naperville.

The home was unoccupied at the time, and there were no other injuries, it said.

2 LACoFD FIRE APPARATUS CRASHES

Sunday, June 7, 2015  Two people were hospitalized after one of three separate crashes -- two involving L.A. County firetrucks and the third a sheriff's deputy -- along Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu on Saturday, Los Angeles County sheriff's officials said.The three crashes happened within a two-hour window beginning about 12:30 p.m., when officials say a fire engine smashed into a gray Toyota Prius pulling out of an intersection near Zumirez Drive.

Two women in the Prius were airlifted to a hospital in unknown condition, said Lt. A.J. Rotella of the Sheriff's Department's Malibu station.

About half an hour later, a vehicle rear-ended a sheriff's cruiser near the intersection of PCH and Winding Way, Rotella said. Nobody was injured.

An hour or so later and less than half a mile to the east, a smaller firetruck was involved in a crash with a compact car making a U-turn, Rotella said, adding that a paramedic suffered minor injuries.

OH FF INJURED AT HOUSE FIRE WITH RESCUE

Sunday, June 7, 2015  A civilian and a firefighter were injured in a Wickliffe fire Saturday morning, authorities said. According to the Wickliffe Fire Department, firefighters battled the two-alarm house fire just after 1 a.m. at the 28900 block of Ridge Road near Coulby Park.

When crews arrived, they located heavy fire in the back of the single-family residential house and saw a female civilian standing on an extension of the second floor roof. The fire department said firefighters rescued the woman by extending a ladder and helping her down.

The woman was first taken to Euclid Hospital and was later taken to Cleveland MetroHealth Medical Center, where she has since been released.

The injured Euclid firefighter was taken to Euclid Hospital. The extent of - and details surrounding - the firefighter's injuries were not immediately available. That firefighter has been released Euclid fire officials said.

2 FF INJURED IN AUSTRALIAN POWER STATION FIRE

Sunday, June 7, 2015  TWO fire fighters and an employee have been injured during a fire at a power station near Port Augusta.The Advertiser understands one of the injured firefighters, a woman in her 40s, was blown backwards by an explosion and hurt her back when she fell.

An SA Ambulance spokesman said the woman was taken to Port Augusta Hospital.

The spokesman said the Royal Flying Doctor Service was flying the second injured firefighter, a man in his mid 20s, to the Royal Adelaide Hospital for treatment of burns to his face and arms.

A Country Fire Service spokesman said four people in total had been injured, including two employees.

mergency services including Country Fire Service and Metropolitan Fire Service, were called to the blaze on Power Station Rd, Port Paterson just before 11am.

The fire started near one of the boiler areas at the station, about 9km south of Port Augusta.

FDNY FIREFIGHTER TO RECEIVE TOP FIREHOUSE HERO AWARD, OTHER HEROIC FIREFIGHTERS TO BE RECOGNIZED AS WELL

Sunday, June 7, 2015  Firefighter Dominick Muschello, FDNY Ladder 157, has been selected as the top winner in the Firehouse Magazine Heroism Awards Program. Muschello will be recognized for his actions on Thursday, July 16, 2015, during the opening ceremony at the Firehouse Expo conference in Baltimore.
Muschello is recognized for his bravery during a multiple dwelling fire on Nov. 19, 2014. Using the tower ladder bucket as a shield, Muschello rode the ladder through the flames to the third floor where people were reported to be trapped. Muschello searched the hoarded apartment and located a victim whom he pulled over the debris to the window. Shielding the victim from flashover-like conditions, Muschello removed the victim to the tower ladder bucket with the help of a fellow firefighter and then down to the street. Muschello then returned to the third floor with another firefighter to search for additional victims. They located a second victim in the hallway and removed that victim throu...
