FDNY HOLDS FIRST SUMMER BLOCK PARTY COMMUNITY EVENT TO CELEBRATE 150TH ANNIVERSARY
The first FDNY150 Block Party Community Event of the summer was held in Brooklyn
On Saturday, June 13, FDNY held its first Summer Block Party Community Event in celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the Department outside the Quarters of Engine Company 214 and Ladder Company 111 on Hancock Street in Brooklyn.Â
Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro announced that FDNY will continue the Department's 150th anniversary celebration by hosting a series of 12 Summer Block Party community events at Firehouses and EMS stations in all five boroughs.
"For the past 150 years, FDNY members have bravely protected life and property in New York City - an enduring devotion to the city they are sworn to protect," said Commissioner Nigro. "Following the incredible success of our citywide open house events in May, we are inviting New Yorkers of all ages to our firehouses and EMS Stations all summer long to continue the celebration of this historic year."

Engine Company 214 demonstrated how they extinguish a fire and then volunteers from the neighborhood helped them drain and pack the hose so that they are ready for their next emergency.
Afterwards, Ladder Company 111 demonstrated how to use the Hurst Tool to extricate a "patient" from a vehicle.
"We have a great relationship with the community, everyday people stop by and say hello," Firefighter Barnard Randall of Ladder Company 111. "It's great that they came out to celebrate with us."

More than 1,000 neighborhood residents attended the community event and celebrated 150 years of the Department's service to New York City. The members of Engine Company 214 and Ladder Company 111 have received nearly 50 medals serving their neighborhood, including Firefighter Vincent T. Niesi of Ladder Company 111, a 13-year veteran of the company, who in 2014 received the Emerald Society Pipes and Drums Medal for his role in rescuing four civilians from a smoke filled apartment.
At each Summer Block Party, FDNY members will hold demonstrations, offer free fire safety education and conduct tours of FDNY apparatus, including the FDNY150 Fire Truck and Ambulance. In addition, those attending can take part in free compressions-only CPR classes and learn more about careers within the FDNY. Volunteers from the American Red Cross will also be on hand at all locations to schedule free smoke/carbon monoxide alarm installations.
