On Friday, June 18, the thirteenth class of the FDNY Officers Management Institute graduated from the intensive program in Brooklyn. The FDNY Officers Management Institute curriculum was developed by Columbia University and held at General Electric’s John F. Welch Leadership Center.
FDNY Officers Management Institute’s unique curriculum emphasizes strategic management and leadership skill development as fundamental skills necessary to the department’s continuing success in fulfilling its core mission of protecting life and property in New York City.
The program was created in 2002 from a key recommendation of the McKinsey Report รข€“ to provide senior Fire and EMS Chiefs with the necessary managerial skills to lead the Department in a changing world. With the close of the 2015 session, 211 officers have graduated from the FDNY Officers Management Institute, and the program continues to have a profound impact on the Department’s senior staff.
“FOMI may have begun as a way to rebuild following a tragedy,” said Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro. “Today, it is ensuring our continued strength, and making certain that while we celebrate our storied history this year, we have a strong foundation for many, many years to come.”
As part of the nearly 7 months of training, the 16 participating officers completed group projects focusing on identifying opportunities for programmatic development within the Fire Department. This year’s groups evaluated the need for greater intergovernmental affairs and strategic partnerships; continuing program sustainability with fund elimination; and ways of making EMS safer.
“The projects that have come from FOMI have also improved our Department in so many ways,” said Chief of Department James E. Leonard. “This is important work and it will not only make each of you better leaders; it’s making us a much stronger Department. Today, each of you has taken another important step in what have already been excellent careers of service.”
“Our focus was on the need to expand intergovernmental affairs and partnerships within FDNY to develop a more proactive approach to our efforts. Weneed to step-up and be in a position to lead and we made specific recommendations on how that goal may be achieved,” said EMS Deputy Chief Edward Bobb, whose project focused on intergovernmental affairs. “I feel privileged and better equipped to lead because this is the best program. The entire group was very talented and professional and I learned a lot from them - it was just a great experience.”
