FDNY Fire Marshals in Action

You don't hear that much about the FDNY Fire Marshals as about some other people in the Fire Service..

They are chronically understaffed and have a very difficult job ( risks are such that they all "carry", that is, are armed when on the job--they never know who might want to put an end to their investigation!

FDNY Fire Marshals arrested Aureliano Flores, 21, of Brooklyn for arson

Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro announced today that Fire Marshals have arrested a suspect in connection with a gasoline-fueled fire on May 24, 2015 at 1444 First Avenue in Manhattan.

Aureliano Flores, 21, of Brooklyn was arrested for setting a fire inside “Pony Bar,” a bar located on the first floor of a 4-story apartment building.  Fire Marshals determined that Mr. Flores, who has been employed for the last year at the location, entered the establishment after it had closed and stole approximately $2,200.  Mr. Flores - using an umbrella in an attempt to shield his identity from security cameras inside the bar - set multiple fires meant to conceal the theft.  FDNY units were calls to 1444 First Avenue at 5:17 a.m. on May 24.  Twelve units comprised of 60 Firefighters arrived in minutes and quickly brought the fire under control at 5:56 a.m.

“Arson is a callous crime which puts the lives of New Yorkers and responding Firefighters at risk,” said Commissioner Nigro.  “Thanks to the outstanding training and quick response of our Firefighters, no one was injured in this fire.  I applaud the extensive investigative work by our Fire Marshals to track down and apprehend this individual who put so many lives at risk.”

Mr. Flores is charged with arson, burglary, and reckless endangerment.  During the investigation Fire Marshals worked closely with the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, which will prosecute the case.  Defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
