Though architect Michael Graves passed away earlier this year, his work lives on around the world, and now part of his artistic legacy has a permanent home in Brooklyn. A series of five murals by Graves has been added to the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s permanent collection and is now installed in the Leperq Space in the Peter J. Sharp Building. The paintings were originally commissioned by fellow architect Charles Gwathmey as part of his firm’s design for the Trammo offices on New York’s Park Avenue. The eight-panel postmodern works, each measuring about 92.5" by 50", depict abstract combinations of classical architectural motifs in vibrant colors. The BAM installation puts the murals on public view for the first time—a fitting tribute to the architect who made design accessible to the masses.
