Warsaw's second metro line opens

Warsaw Mayor Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz officially launched the second subway line in Poland’s capital on Sunday.
The new line which runs east-west is 6.1 km long including a tunnel under the Vistula river with seven stations. It stretches between the western Wola district and the eastern bank of the Vistula. It complements the first, north to south metro line, which was opened in 1995. The transfer between the two lines is at Swietokrzyska station.
The construction of the second line began in August, 2010 and it was scheduled to open last December.
Gronkiewicz-Waltz said at the opening ceremony that it was a historic moment for Varsovians and apologized for the delays in the construction work.
The second line includes the following stations: Rondo Daszynskiego, Rondo ONZ, Swietokrzyska, Nowy Swiat, Powisle, Stadion and Dworzec Wilenski.
