All change for tobacco firms
10th January 2015The European Commission has stated that it wishes Poland to start including a catalogue of graphic photos on it cigarette packs by next year, reports TVN24.
The news station states that a total of 14 “dramatic images” are to be used, with some including photos of a woman coughing up blood, wounds after smoking-related surgery and an amputated leg. Each photo is to accompanied by a description explaining why the image was placed there - for example, next to a photo of ravaged teeth it states “smoking destroys teeth and gums” and next a newborn baby it is written “smoking can kill your unborn child”.
Poland has until the end of the year to decide which photos will be placed on packets but it is stipulated that the image must occupy as much as 65 percent of the package’s surface.
In addition to this, as of 2016 flavoured cigarettes will also be banned, with the exception of menthol cigarettes. These will have a four-year phasing-out period meaning the ban will come into force as of 2020.
