Dear EMS1 Subscriber,
Posting ambulances on corners and parking lots might make some measurable improvement in response, but that time is likely insignificant to patient outcome. A report of "medics sleeping" reminds us of the unwinnable nature of posting for the people asked to do it. Every medic probably has a story of parking at a post, wide awake, busily typing a PCR, and being accosted for malingering: "What don't you have anything better to do than just sit here?"
That report, along with news of a disputed delay in D.C. for an ambulance and a denied budget request for more medics in an overburdened system, remind us that the public perception of EMS is an enduring challenge. How do we meet the public's expectations and treat our personnel with dignity and respect?
