Good Movie Emporium- Loews AMC Kips Bay

Not the best theaters in Manhattan but very good...clean, good bathrooms,-
Drawbacks: Too many trailers for movies yet to come, sound levels too high by half on these things too ( when movies have explosions in them as so many have these days, will test the mettle of your eardrums).

Ive been working in this area for over three years and this was the first time i saw a movie in this theater. I didn't realize how big it was.  The theater was cleab and well maintained. I love that they have a large women's bathroom with tons of stalls. Even though it was a long line for the bathroom it moved very quickly.

We saw two movies thar day and they were in two different theater rooms.  The first room was big and the chairs were comfortable.  The second theater room was very tiny but okay because it wasn't crowded.  If there were more people, I can see how it would feel a bit cramped.  We didn't purchase any snacks.

Parking is crazy to get in this area.  My friend and i lucked out because I knew what time people would be leaving from work right around the corner.  Towards the later afternoon,  we saw a lot of older patrons coming to the movies. Overall,  there were no issues and I would come again.

Great theater and great staff :) we saw dumb and dumber opening night and got great seats because of how organized their lines/seating schedules were.

Took off a start because the concession person was such a space cadet!

Good theater for double bill action, but sound can easily leak between theaters.

Coming from Long Island City, the Kips Bay Theater is one of the best options for theaters.  Times Square is nuts and always crowded, and these theaters are pretty nice and never overly crowded.  Always clean, but the theaters themselves are not that large and the screens aren't that big.

So pluses - easy to smuggle stuff in, and easy to double bill between movies on the same floor - either the 10 upstairs, or the 5 downstairs.

Minuses - seats are generic, and when we were there last time there was huge noise spread from the theater on the left into our theater.  Huge bass booms and explosions when they clearly did not overlap with Hunger Games-Mockingjay took us out of the movie on a few occasions.  Either theater 8 was hugely turned up, or they skimped on noise dampening in the wall between 8 and 9.

Net net, it's still our best option.  Never any issues with rodents or anything, always clean and a lack of annoying clientele makes this theater a good option.  Were it not for the bass booming leakage last time there, it would be 4 stars.

I love Kips Bay AMC!!!! My favorite movie theater in the city. Huge theater, delicious hot food items at the concession stands, several floors, clean, bright and great service!!! You can also occasionally spot celebrities here.

Only negative thing I'd say is parking (but then again we're talking about NYC). It's also conveniently located next to a Coffee Bean and Chipotle *win win* and also walking distance to various delicious eateries. If you're planning to catch a movie in the city, this is the best option around!!

The theater was 90+ degrees, seriously, no exaggeration, was concerned some older viewers were going to suffer from heat stroke. Given recent events you'd also think security would be tighter, half the theater brought in backpacks. The side effect is a Thai feast to the front and a grocery bag full of corn nuts to the right. Smelled like a port o potty in the subway in July. Save your $15, oh ya, "matinee" ends at noon.

Small, clean theatre. It has all the newly released movies just like all the other AMC Loews. Not as big as the one on the West side of 34th street but we came here because the movie we wanted to watch didn't have times that suited our schedule at AMC Empire 25. It's a less crowded area, but a bit of walk from Herald Square.

I absolutely love the Kips Bay AMC! They are walking distance for me & have the majority of wide releases on their opening weekend. But most importantly, they have a matinee! This is extremely important with the high cost of movies in New York City. Also, they don't usually have much of a crowd at the early morning screenings, so you don't generally need to buy tickets in advance. They're a lot newer and cleaner than 19th Street theatre.

Another cool feature? There's a CitiBike rack right outside, so you can grab one on your way home, to help burn off some calories from that movie popcorn and candy you scarfed down!

Skip seeing movies in IMAX here and go to Lincoln Square instead. This theatre has one of those smaller, overpriced "Lie-MAX" screens.

Lastly, they have great customer service! When I saw Captain America here, they forgot to turn out the lights when the movie started; took about 20 minutes to get them to turn them off. When we exited the theatre, staff was waiting to hand out free passes to all of us to make up for the glitch. Amazing!

I went to this movie theater last night to see Gone Girl.

    * Parking is super tight, even on a Sunday.

    * It's expensive (two tickets alone was almost $30), as all movie chains but they do have a matinee for about $7. Unfortunately, we didn't make that showing. That being said, we didn't have to wait in line to purchase our ticket. We just walked right up to the counter (this was about 4:00pm)

    * The movie started at 4:35pm and we got there 20 minutes early. When we walked into the movie theater the movie was still playing - in a pivotal scene. I would later find out that at that point the movie still had another 15 to 20 mins to it, so they were cutting it very close with the showing times. I'm used to one showing ending at least 30 mins before the next to give the cleaning crew time to clean. At the very least there should have been a warning on the screen in front of the theater that the movie was still in progress.

    * While I'm on the subject, the cleaning crew did show up but there were only 3 of them and they were in and out in less than 5 minutes, which means they probably didn't do a very thorough cleaning.

    * We got very good seats because we were one of the first to bumrush the entrance (some guy had to tell everyone to line up against the wall so people exiting the theater could do so comfortably.

    * The crowd was fine. No loud people, no cell phones going off, no texting happening, no theater clown trying to test out new material, etc. so I was very happy with that.

    * The bathroom was fairly clean, and the line wasn't crazy when we got there. Although someone almost pushed in my door (it opened) despite me locking it?

    * We didn't sample the food so I can't commend on that but I'm pretty sure it was expensive.

The Loews Kips Bay theater has a nice location near Murray Hill. I have visited this location twice now; the first time on the Friday after Mockingjay movie release and then a visit to their IMAX theater for Interstellar. Both experiences have greatly differed. The evening I went to see Mockingjay the hall area upstairs was packed and there was a huge line. The staff was doing their best to keep everything organized. When we finally got in the theater I had to end up sitting in second row on the floor because there were no seats left on the stadium seating area. However, staff could've made sure all seats were occupied instead of standing around and letting people use their jackets to occupy empty seats. There was definitely room to sit higher up. We wanted to get a refund or a different showing ticket but the staff member didn't want to help us. So we just sucked it up. When I went to go see Interstellar we got there 30 min before the showing time and were able to get good seats in the middle. The theater ended up getting pretty full so I highly recommend getting here early. The seating areas for this particular location aren't the biggest. I've used Fandango to purchase my tickets both times and it definitely saves time when arriving to the theater. You can walk in grab a seat and then have a friend/boyfriend go grab the popcorn and snacks. Overall a nice area and a lot calmer than the theaters by Times Square.
