STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Several street closures will be in effect
Thursday morning, when the funeral for fallen FDNY hero Lt. Gordon
"Matt" Ambelas takes place at St. Clare's R.C. Church in Great Kills.
According to a release by the NYPD, the following roads will be closed to traffic from approximately 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. as a result:
Anywhere between 5,000 to 10,000 people were expected to attend the wakes.
At Tuesday's service, family, friends, fellow firefighters and civilians lined up outside the Great Kills funeral home, some of whom spoke to reporters about Ambelas, who died Saturday battling a blaze on the 19th floor of a building in Brooklyn.
"He was the best of the best," said Eric Bischoff, who worked with Ambelas for close to 13 years at Ladder Co. 81 in South Beach.
Others, including Lt. Matthew Komorowsk, a member of Ladder 119, spoke to the Staten Island resident's dedication and bravery.
