Best reviews in Manhattan go for one in Gramercy area
Some people love it, others less than thrilled..stress it is NOT "swanky"
All place like this in Manhattan are over-priced it seems, that is the usual complaint to begin with--but some say this is " reasonable" ( for Manhattan)

Manhattan, NYIt's ok. Good rate for NYC and no contract option. No row machine for cardio and small selection but rarely crowded even at peak hours.
Took them a while to replace the free weights as promised. -

New York, NYhad to get back onto yelp after years in order to post this.
for $55 a month you get what you pay. synergy is basically a poor man's ny sports club, so imagine all the little crappy things about ny sports club being even crappier in this place -- too crowded, dusty/dirty, poorly kept bathrooms, limited equipment, cramped space. a couple other low lights: 1) they give out small gym towels which have a funny smell. they seem to launder them on site and don't have a powerful enough washer. 2) the gym has a tiny stretching area which has a hole in the floor they covered with a mat. be careful not to step in that hole. also, only one squat rack which bros are always on and don't reset.
I would say the monthly fee should be more like $30 not $55 given the conditions described above.
BUT the real reason I am writing this negative review is the BAD BUSINESS PRACTICE they have concerning membership cancellation: they require a letter sent via certified mail. I live around the corner from the place but I can't walk in and cancel in person. I can't even hand them a letter. Yes, read the fine print, blah blah blah, but really, I have cancelled gym memberships before and this is a new low. certainly no one pointed out this onerous cancellation policy when i signed up. when i called to cancel the guy was defensive and said 'its in the contract' -- probably lots of people are unhappy with this sleazy cancellation policy. OK well I'm off to the post office to wait in line to get my certified mail to cancel my gym membership starting next billing cycle, hopefully.
Also not long ago they had a 'membership appreciation day' -- no complimentary sports drinks/energy bars, key chains, etc, just a promotion for a massage service that you had to sign up for. WACK! -

I did a trial here for 3 days a few weeks ago and had a pretty mediocre experience. The reason why I came in is because the gym offers a great rate to the School of Visual Arts (SVA), $300 for the year without any catches, intro fees or otherwise. This truly is an unbeatable deal.
The space itself is very small, by the looks of the Yelp photos you get an idea that it's a little larger than it actually is. The cardio machines are very awkwardly placed and very close together. Right smack across from the reception desk is the spinning machines and it's almost like their staff is watching you work out, even if they actually aren' (but we all know that's an awkward gym taboo). The downstairs is entirely dedicated to weights/lifting and the locker room, it's a bit dark and dingy looking. The entire gym itself has no windows, which is actually a huge selling point for me - the only window is the open glass door. I guess it gives you the ability to "lose track of time," but to me it just makes me feel trapped.
The staff was very sweet, both the gentleman and woman I spoke with we're very friendly and courteous. The reason why I am giving Synergy 3 stars instead of 2 is because 1.) If your an SVA student it's rate that can't be beat and 2.) The staff was sweet and the machines have been brought up to date (all have "Cardio Theater"). All in all I'd never pay too much for this place because there are other budget gyms not too far away (Blink on LES and Boom in Murray Hill), which provide a cleaner, bigger gym environment BUT if you happen to be an SVA student on a super budget, go for it! -

New York, NYRead your contract carefully; there are devils in those details. e.g., expect to pay for a full month when you cancel.
It was ok for nyc if it were, in fact, $55/month, but with all of the fees (enrollment, last month, lost cards), you end up paying much more. Also, there always seems to be a lot of hair along the walls in room where classes are held. -

New York, NYRight around the corner from my apartment: check
Low price for Manhattan gyms: check
Friendly staff: check
Clean, organized, open 24 hours: check
I do love this place. Aside from what I have above, the place is almost never packed. Not once, ever, have I waited to use a cardio/other machine. All of the cardio machines are very new and equipped with the whole TV function, etc.
The only thing this place lacks is variety. You're paying for a budget gym- and you're getting it. They have everything you need, but there's only a few options for cardio equipment, and some of the weight lifting stations are a bit dated. (Though they have an excellent free weight area). I've never been to a class but the offering isn't exceptional.
All in all a great place. Never crowded, but the people there, staff included, are always friendly and easy-going. -

New York, NYGreat gym for the price and location. I've been coming here for almost a year and haven't seen the problems with the flooding other people mentioned. The equipment is fine, if a little old, but they're slowly upgrading it. The other downside is that there's not a lot of space so it's a little cramped but that's not a big deal.
I go to one of the classes every week, and so far it's been great. The gym staff are friendly, especially the Ghanan guys. -

Washington, DCYou get what you pay for with the 22nd St. location. They have everything you need but stuff is often old or slightly broken. Take the elliptical trainers: some are ancient, one squeaks, the incline adjustment is broken on all of them and the heart rate sensors are touchy yet they will get the job done if you are looking for some time on an elliptical trainer. This place is too cheap and convenient for me to think about going elsewhere yet I dearly miss the equinox membership that I had a few years back.
Important: Don't be fooled by the website or even the signs on the outside of this location, there are no classes offered here as of Aug. 2008. They promised classes last summer, then at christmas, then they even put up sign up sheets but alas, months have gone by since those sheets came down and there are still no classes. -

New York, NYIt's $55/month now plus a huge enrollment fee ($150), and that's during their sale period - not a bad price for some places, but way too much for this gym. -

Concord, NCA utilitarian place for those that don't need a swanky gym and like the idea of $35 or so a month. The employees are nice, the equipment is basic (no TV screens on the machines etc), but fairly new and in good condition. The gym is small but rarely too crowded and overall a good value. Chelsea Piers and MPHC are always draws because I am a climber and love their walls - but for $400 a year the decision to stay put is pretty easy! I'm not sure how consistantly the other gyms are run - I've heard bad reviews of other Synergy gyms - so this applies to the East 22nd Street location only! -

New York, NYi've been a member for almost a year and i love it. it's small and convenient, and provides all necessary equipment for even the hard core weight lifters. the gym is clean and NEVER too crowded (even at "peak" 6pm!!) the staff are all very friendly and quite literally my second family. i highly recommend classes with zane and king - and either would work as a great personal trainer. -

New York, NYFor Manhattan, this gym is reasonably priced. For about $40 month. This gym has all the basics in regards to their equipment. The free weights are located down stairs. The climate in this gym was bad for few years, but they seemed to have identified the lack of heat in the winter and made adjustments. The staff here are great and seem that they have been there for many years. My biggest complaint are the members and occasional flooding on the lower level and mens locker room. The gym etiquette here is as bad as a gym gets. I used to go there in the morning and nobody racks their weights and plates at all. They leave their dumbbells on the floor. In the mens locker room, the management keeps putting notices that the locks will be cut off if items are not removed, but they don't cut off the locks. Members are stealing the locker rental service. Its hard to get an unused large locker when its slow there. The lower level floods in heavy rainstorms and I have seen sewage seep into the drains on those rainy days. I find this unacceptable. You get what you pay for here. This gym needs a serious equipment and structural upgrade. You reading this Lenny?Listed in: My reviews
