A Matter of Health- Upper East Side/Yorkville

Well, this is a big place and seems to be another neighborhood institution

Considering location, I assumed it is pricey--but a good number of reviewers say prices are OK

Very good reviews overall--

I can't get enough of this place! It's like shopping at Whole Foods or Fairway without the sticker shock.

Their organic fruits and veggies are VERY fairly priced. For example: organic bananas for 79 cents a pound - WF charges the same for their nonorganic bananas and over a dollar for their organic variety.

When you first enter the store, it seems a bit small but turn the corner and there are shelves and shelves items from familiar grocery store brands as well as up-and-coming hippie organic/gluten free/vegan brands. They also have an extensive selection of all natural and organic cosmetics and toiletries.

Another example of how fairly priced and affordable this place is... Fage at Gristedes or Food Emporium will run you $1.99 when not on sale. The non-sale price here is $1.39! Ok ok one more example - my all natural non-aluminum containing deodorant is $5 at Duane Reade across the street.... $3 here!!!

I came in here just to take a peek and left with a bag full of goodies :) This place is now a weekly stop for me!

I discovered this place since it was near my work and decided it was best to stock up on healthy snacks.

I'm so happy I found this place since the prices are reasonable when purchasing raw almonds (about $4) for a container and the Chobani Greek yogurt with the mix in nuts and fruit on the side.

I can purchase strawberries for $3.99 and there's a vast selection of tea ranging from Yogi to Harney and Sons.

Furthermore, I was overwhelmed by the beauty product section ranging from Kiss My Face to the more higher end products.

I can buy a weeks worth of yogurt, tea, raw almonds, strawberries without breaking the bank and based on how much you buy, if you receive one of those discount cards, you can earn points!

I truly like this place and although it's relatively devoid of customers based on places like Gristedes and Food Emporium in the area, I'm pretty sure this place will pick up over the next few months.

My fav health food store in the hood. Staff is helpful and knowledgeable; You can get nutritional counseling free of charge. My preferential location is 77 & 1st as that is a community type of a store.

This place has everything a health nut could want, and it is at affordable prices for what you're getting. (Of course, General Mills cheerios cost less than their organic equivalent!) The produce is fresh. The staff is friendly and helpful. There is a machine for making fresh almond/peanut butter. I love this neighborhood gem.

This was my second venture to the new location on First Avenue & 72nd Street.
My initial experience I located all items on my own.
But, this time I needed guidance.

    A Total Disaster!

The help is Rude and Arrogant, acted as though they were doing me a favor when asked  where a specific item was located.

This individual  acted as though they could not understand what I was asking  to locate.

Another employee had no idea where items were located and it was obvious that both were definitely not trained in Customer Service.

CONSUMER BEWARE!  STAY AWAY FROM THIS STORE!!

Hands down the best health food store I've ever been to.

They're not overpriced, they have EVERYTHING, as a vegan living in Queens shopping can be a pain at times, there's usually about 3 or 4 stores I have to go to to complete my food shopping, since I've discovered A matter of health, taking the ride over the bridge is worth it, it's a one stop shop, they never run out of things.

Friendly and helpful staff the only con is that the aisles are very tight and when it is busy it can get quite annoying to shop since you have to constantly get out of the way for people.

Other than that great store, awesome juice bar, great prices.

There is a good selection of items at a discounted prices, but it's also kind of dingy in there. They have between 6-10 people restocking at all times, which during peak hours means that you will be bumping into all sorts of people, not all of which are friendly. I always get the impression that the staff hates the patrons too. Also, there is a really mean cat that lives in the shop and is not about scratching customers.

They are moving to a larger location. Hopefully that will help with the annoyances of the current shop

This is by far my favorite health food store!
I used to work in the neighborhood and would come here sometimes 2-3 times a day , I still travel from Astoria to shop here
You can't beat these prices ANYWHERE!
They have anything you can imagine , excellent selection of foods, vitamins, proteins, vegetables, fruit , juices etc I can keep going forever !!!
The only annoying thing about this store is the very tight isles , if it's busy it's pretty hard to navigate around here but I'm still a huge fan , lines may get long but move very fast with 3 or 4 cashiers working
Also for vegans they have a good selection of goodies even brownies, muffins, cakes and Danishes but beware these tasty treats sellout fast !!!!!!!!
    Great value

A little overwhelming - this place is pretty jam packed with products. But luckily I found exactly what I was looking for, a specific type of tea, of which the cashier helped me choose between two, albeit with a little prodding.

FYI: New location at 1347 First Ave and 72nd St. now OPEN! It is at least 3x larger than the 1478 spot, so spacious, jammed packed with goodies, reasonable prices and a block away from my apt so I am thrilled. I am not a health nut but just coming here makes me want to be one. Must Go!

First time visit.  As soon as I entered, I was greeted by employee asking if I needed help.  I asked her "why I should shop here" & she was taken aback at first (with a smile) & then proceeded to explain the advantages (including better prices than the competitor on 72nd).  I purchased one of their fresh cold salads & other staples.  I was given a "rewards card" & I will definitely return often.

Terrific health food store in my neighborhood that is packed wall to wall with all types of products.

On every shelf and wall there are organic grocery items, supplements, yogurts, juices, vitamins, produce, refrigerated/freezer products, cereals, nuts, alternative milks, prepared foods, beauty items, healthy snacks, protein bars, etc.

The people who work here are fairly knowledgeable, and helpful. As with most health food stores that sell specialty organic and healthier items the prices can be higher than your regular supermarket.

It's a nice alternative to shop at rather than the vitamin chains or grocery stores in the area, and sometimes you can discover some hard to find items here.

This is the most amazing health food store in all of NYC!!! The prices are amazing for what you get and are very competitive to whole foods where I usually buy all of my items. They also have an AWESOME juice bar all the way in the back that you literally will never find unless you know it's there but the drinks are sooo good. I recommend the amazon warrior, super delish!

They have a lot of various vitamins, produce, and organic food. Everything here is very healthy so don't worry, you're in good hands. The staff is extremely friendly and eager to help all that need. If I ever move back to NYC hopefully it's like on top of this place!!

Amazing selection and prices. They frequently have items that are cheaper than larger grocery stores nearby.

Staff is very helpful and knowledgable. I go here almost every day and am always finding new healthy things to try.

I am really happy that this store opened its new location on 72nd and 1st. The Food Emporium across the street didn't have enough variety of organic fruits for me and its occasional other organic foods tend to be super pricey. I would frequently schlep across town to Trader Joe's which can become very time consuming, and it is always  frustratingly crowded! A Matter of Health's prices are pretty competitive, compared to Food Emporium as noted, and definitely to Whole Foods, though as some have said, it's not rock bottom prices (TJ's IS cheaper), but living in Manhattan and trying to eat healthy/organic frequently, I have accepted this as my cost of living. I still intend to go to TJ's occasionally and stock up on some expensive staple items (instant coffee, organic nuts, nut butters, etc), but now I have been happily doing most of my grocery shopping at A Matter of Health.

I LOVE this place.  It used to be two blocks away and I went weekly.  But then I moved 4 years ago.      So I make a monthly trek uptown to stock up on teas, beauty products, cereal, frozen stuff and vitamins for a good value.  Crowded little store, reminds me of the Health Food Store my Mom used to drag us too as kids, but I love it and miss it.
