Today, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio signs legislation introduced by Council Members Steven Matteo and Joe Borelli to rename the intersection of Getz Avenue and Katan Avenue in Staten Island to FDNY Capt. John R. Graziano Way. Born on August 27, 1951, Captain Graziano served with the FDNY for 26 years. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1994 and to Captain in 2003. He died of pancreatic cancer on March 13, 2015, as a result of a 9/11 related illness. He is one of 110 FDNY members listed on the World Trade Center Memorial Wall at FDNY Headquarters in Brooklyn, which honors FDNY members who have died of illnesses related to their work in the rescue and recovery efforts during and after September 11.

While operating on the fourth floor, Captain McDonnell sensed the ceiling was about to collapse and pushed two of his Firefighters into the hallway. The burning ceiling came down on him, trapping him. Before he could be pulled out, sixty-five percent of his body was burned and he succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. Captain McDonnell was awarded the James Gordon Bennett Medal and the Doctor Harry M.
