Memphis Fire Department arrived and worked to put out the flames, but they were unable to save the house. The family stood by powerless to save their home and belongings--all of which are now lost, just weeks before Christmas. "I saw smoke coming from the house," Leon Seals, homeowner, said. Seals had returned home around 1:30 p.m. when he saw smoke. Although it did not look real bad at first, that quickly changed. "It was awful. I tried to get in the front door and it was too thick. I came back out. I tried to go around, knocked the back door in and it was still too hot to touch." Neighbor Thurman Byrd was able to alert the man who lived next door to the house, fearing the fire might jump next door. "I figured it might go up," Byrd said. However... [ more ]       Tweet   IRISH FFs FIND PIPE BOMB AFTER FIRE  Tuesday, December 1, 2015    The device, understood to be a pipe bomb, was placed at a home in the Ard Na Smoll area of Dungiven.It was the third explosive device left in the Dungiven area in the last four weeks. PSNI superintendent John Magill, who said a link between the incidents could not be ruled out, said the latest bomb had the potential to kill or injure. "It was discovered by firefighters when they turned out to deal with two wheelie bins on fire at a house at Ard Na Smoll," he said. "Those firefighters are local people giving up their time to help local communities in emergencies and were put at risk by this device. "This is the third viable device uncovered in the Dungiven area in the past four weeks." Mr Magill said two men were seen running away from the area at about 9pm on Monday. Kolarick Rank: DeputyChief Status: Volunteer Date of Incident: 09/17/2015 Fire Department: Keasbey Protection VFD Age: 59 Years of Service: 40 Date of Death: 11/11/2015 Incident Description: Deputy Chief Kolarick returned to the firehouse after a fire alarm response. Inside of the firehouse, Kolarick suffered a medical emergency and collapsed. He was subsequently transported to a local hospital where he remained hospitalized until the time of his passing. [ more ]       Tweet   FFs SHOT AT IN NY STATE AT FIRE  WHEC Video  Tuesday, December 1, 2015    Officials confirmed that a suspect is now in custody.This is now a homicide and fire investigation. Family members tell us a 68-year-old man was shot and killed early this morning on Selden Road. Sheriff Patrick O'Flynn says it appears the suspect wanted police to shoot him. Family members believe their loved one was shot by a neighbor who they say set his own house on fire. Police were initially called to a home on Selden Road for a fire around 4 Tuesday morning. Genesee County Emergency Management told everyone on Selden Road to stay inside their homes around 5:30 Tuesday morning. The shelter in place has since been canceled and Leroy school is open. Fire officials in Leroy tell us someone shot at the first firefighters on the scene. No firefighters were hurt. Selden Road is currently shut down between Route 19 and West Bergen Road. [ more ]       Tweet   MAGNESIUM EXPLOSION IN NC  KSDK.com  Tuesday, December 1, 2015   Firefighter's responded to a vehicle fire on Highway 61 at Big Creek Sunday evening, that resulted in a magnesium explosion. Fortunately, there were no injuries. Magnesium can have an intense reaction if it comes into contact with water. A bright light is generated and creates an intense heat that can reach 3,100 plus degrees. Flash blindness, along with producing toxic fumes, also occur. In this particular case, there was a tool made of magnesium located in the vehicle.       Tweet   2 FFs INJURED IN GARAGE FIRE IN PHILLY  ABC6 video  Tuesday, December 1, 2015   Two firefighters and a civilian were injured after a fire broke out at a garage in the Olney section of Philadelphia. The fire broke out around 7:30 p.m. Monday on the 100 block of West Wellens Street. The fire broke through the roof of the one story structure and spread to an adjacent building. more ]       Tweet   FIRE IN THE FIRE STATION-TEXAS  Tuesday, December 1, 2015   It's one call that most fire departments aren't accustomed to hearing. At around 8:30 am Monday, Chief Marvin Vinson with the Crims Chapel Volunteer Fire Department in Henderson woke up to smoke coming out of the fire station. "I stepped outside to get the newspaper -- I do live next door -- and saw smoke coming out of the vents on top of the station," says Vinson. The chief, the only one at the station when it caught fire, says the situation was hard to grasp, but he realized he had to act quickly. "My bunker gear's in there, everything's in the fire station. So it's a totally helpless feeling," Vinson says. "I just know the quicker I could call for mutual aid, the better it was going to be." [ more ]       Tweet   NJ FF AND RESIDENT INJURED AT FIRE  Monday, November 30, 2015    Two people were injured Monday morning in a house fire on Chestnut Hill Drive, police said.At about 8:20 a.m., police and firefighters responded to a call reporting a smoke condition at a home on Chestnut Hill Drive, Denville police Capt. Paul Nigro said. A neighbor was taken to Morristown Medical Center for smoke inhalation after he entered the home in order to pull out the family dog, Nigro said. The dog was not injured in the blaze. A firefighter was also injured by falling debris during firefighting efforts, he said. He was treated at Saint Clare's Hospital, Nigro said. The home was rendered uninhabitable as it sustained significant fire, smoke and water damage, he said. [ more ]       Tweet   50 FFs HOSPITALIZED AFTER FIRE IN VIET NAM  Monday, November 30, 2015   More than 50 firefighters were hospitalised after an operation to extinguish a blaze at Nam Hai Port, an official of the Fire Fighting and Prevention Department of Hai Phong said.Initial results showed that soldiers had inhaled the toxic phosphorus fumes, and were suffering manifestations of respiratory failure, Brigadier Le Quoc Tran, director of the department said yesterday. He said a crane dropped a container onto Contship ACE ship which was carrying about 20 containers of phosphorus docked at Nam Hai Port of this northern port city to complete a goods delivery on Friday afternoon. The collision was so strong that it cracked a phosphorus container on board which caught fire. Immediately after the fire occurred, the unit sent more than 100 soldiers to extinguish the blaze. [ more ]       Tweet   FIRE APPARATUS RESPONDING CRASH IN PHILLY  Sunday, November 29, 2015    A crash involving a fire truck in West Philadelphia left several firefighters injured Sunday morning. Fire officials said the crash, in which a vehicle partially rolled over, happened about 10 a.m. at 55th Street and Baltimore Avenue. Authorities confirmed that Philadelphia Fire Department Ladder 13 was involved in the crash. NBC10's Randy Gyllenhaal reported from the scene that five firefighters were taken to the hospital, one of whom was transported as a trauma alert initially but was doing better by about 11:45 a.m. Four parked cars were damaged in the crash. Photos from the block show one car completely crushed under the front of the ladder truck. Witnesses told Gyllenhaal that the truck appeared to be responding to a call when the driver lost control and hit parked cars along Baltimore Avenue. Instructors were manipulating scores on tests at Cal Fire’s firefighting academy in Ione, she told the officers.Browne, who writes test materials for academy cadets and records the scores, said that until earlier that year instructors routinely threw out results for questions that some cadets couldn’t answer. She said they repeatedly told her and other staff to add points to the scores of cadets to compensate. Browne estimated the changes probably affected scores on half the tests in recent years. The orders, she told CHP Sgt. Daniel Webb and Lt. Ezery Beauchamp, made her uncomfortable because she believed they were wrong. “Instead of saying, ‘Hey, we’re not teaching this correctly,’ and keeping (the questions) ... they were just passing students,” ... [ more ]       Tweet   ATLANTA FF INJURED AT PAWN SHOP FIRE  11Alive Video  Sunday, November 29, 2015   An Atlanta firefighter is reportedly in stable condition after being pulled out of a stubborn pawn shop fire on Lakewood Avenue early Saturday morning.According to local NBC affiliate television station11Alive the firefighter was hurt when something fell on him during the firefight.
