PAX - healthy food again

Well, whether it is wholesome or not, this East Midtown Pax foods place gets some pretty mixed ratings! A good number of these reviews are pretty old, though, like from 2008...and the place is still there and busy, so that has to be taken into account.

Never fear, I am still looking for a real top notch Vegan restaurant we can get reviews for, for instance.

    Update - 4/14/2013
I finally decided to try the soups here and really liked the savory, overfilled-with-veggies Mediterranean couscous with roasted vegetables.  A cup is filling enough for a meal, especially if you pair it with a whole wheat roll.  I got the combo with the spinach, mushroom, and feta quiche, which had a nice, buttery crust and a light, fluffy interior.  Okay, it's not on par with Balthazar's but at  $9 for a combo?  Call me a fan, for sure!  The online ordering system made life very easy and efficient since my food was ready when I arrived to pick it up.  Will be back to try the Pressata and more of the soups!

Nothing to write home about, and certainly not worth traveling more than a few blocks.  But a decent operation with pretty fresh stuff.  I do like their morning oatmeal bar.   Fresh blueberries and nicely prepared oats.  The salad is your basic midtown kind of thing.  I'm kinda between "Eh", and "A-ok" but can't think of anything too negative to push it "down there".

Monday lunch is usually a salad to detox all the weekend feast that I've overly indulged.

Pax is the unpopular kid in town, so I just stepped inside and grabbed a salad to-go with literally no line, during lunch peak hour. Great.

Ingredients are mostly fresh. Prices are reasonable. I think I will explore more of their menu items for sure.

I normally like Pax, but I don't know why I got sick after this one. I got a bagel with the lox spread and about 30 minutes later, I felt ridiculously ill. Also, although there are a few tables, it smelt like bleach and Clorox. Which is great - at least the tables are clean. But I wasn't comfortable here and after I started feeling ill, I went to one of the many Starbucks in the area. There are other great places to eat - I wouldn't recommend this one.

It's not the best bagel you'll ever have, but they have a great online ordering system and they will deliver a single bagel to your office in a short amount of time! Their breakfast sandwiches are pretty good. Their lunch - eh, there are much better options in the area.

But - THEY DELIVER A SINGLE BAGEL! My kingdom for a Pax Wholesome Foods in San Francisco!

Objects in this mirror are smaller than they appear.....

This is definitely true for the food here, at least it was for our panini!! My boyfriend and I spilt one for breakfast, and it was filled with brie and turkey and all of the stuff looked really fresh so we were pretty excited. They even warmed up the panini, as paninis should be, but there wasn't quite enough brie in it to make me, the cheese lover, happy. And like I said, it wasn't nearly as filling as it looked, so really we should have gotten more food to split for breakfast because we were tempted by the street vendors selling sausages very soon after this meal.....

but hey, it is cheap and fast and there are tons of them in NYC and it is hard to find a decent cheap eating option in Manhattan so more power to them!!

Everybody in my office is a salad fanatic and have taken me to every salad place on the face of new york city. I'm a sandwich gal but hey, I'm open to some greens once and a while.

I was previously disgusted with Chop't and Just Salads so I decided to try my luck with Pax. Close, but no cigar. Got an awful stomache ache after eating here and there were hard pieces of god knows what in my salad! I thought it may have been seeds from the sun dried tomatoes but it was black. WHAT?!

    $1.50 for mozzarella topping? Srsly?

I had the turkey brie panini from here a few weeks ago and it was way better than their salads. I think i'll just stay away from here in general.

This was the place on my first ever trip to New york that I tried my first New York cannoli. It was decent enough but it was something that was memorable. My fiancee got some coffee and a pastry and felt thew same way. It is decent enough to grab a quick snack, but it isn't something that you will remember as a must do place in the city.

I had some soup. It was hot, had flavor and tons of stuff in it. What more could you ask for? They didn't have bread, but the girl at the counter gave me a handful of cracker packets.

Just fine for a quick and convenient bite to eat.

    Lots of seating available.

The desserts. Gotta get the desserts. Don't get the big cookie, get 3 of the small ones. One pb, one oatmeal and one orgasmic choc. w/ white chocolate chips. OK?

Then after you finish that...get the snickers brownie thing.

If you're still standing get the chocolate covered canolli.

After you have finished wash it down with a giant cup of organic milk.

Now..go home and cry yourself to sleep because you've just had one of the best dessert eating experiences of your life for about $10. Maybe put on a diaper because you might mess the bed.

On the strength of the Pax I went to in the West 30s, I decided to try this Pax out.

Again, pretty decent.  My biggest complaint was the efficiency of the salad line.  It moved at a snail's crawl, despite the workers toiling away.  Not sure what the problem was exactly.

However, the salad was good.  Fresh ingredients.  Itemized lists of caloric values.  Lettuce kept cold.  Above average selection of vegetables.  And different machines that will chop your salad based on what's it it.  Pretty cool I think.  Salad of the future!

Make it a really fast salad without sacrificing quality and I'll walk the extra blocks to get there more often.
