Governors Island

Happy autumn from all of us at Governors Island! We're still beaming from an incredible season. A special thank you to our program organizers and visitors for making 2016 our best year yet.

Season Recap

What a year it's been for the Island! With the opening of the Hills, over 80 organizations producing buzz-worthy events and exhibitions through our OpenHouseGI program, and nearly 600,000 visitors, 2016 was our best season yet. We can't wait to see you back on the Island when we reopen in May 2017, but until then, take a trip down memory lane with some of our 2016 highlights.

A Resilient Park

Did you know that the Hills were engineered with climate change in mind? West 8's Adriaan Geuze, the landscape architect behind the Hills, recently sat down with HBO's Vice News to discuss how Governors Island's new park shows that cities can adapt to a changing climate and rising sea levels while ensuring the public’s quality of life and access to the water’s edge. Watch and read more.

#GovIsland365

Thank you to the over 1,000 New Yorkers who shared their vision for a year-round Governors Island by participating in our #GovIsland365 survey! Countless visitors also wrote (and doodled) about how they'd use the Island to work, learn and play at our interactive chalkboard "cube." An overwhelming number of participants would love to see the Island open year-round, and we hear you! Stay tuned as we continue to work on the Island's next chapter, and read more about the survey results here.

Volunteers Keep Us Afloat!

As Thanksgiving nears, so does the end of our 2016 horticultural season. We want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the thousands of volunteers who kept our island oasis green this year! Thank you to all our corporate and non-profit partners who make stewardship of Governors Island their civic responsibility. A special shout-out to trailblazers American Express and Bloomberg L.P. for leading the charge – we love getting our hands dirty with you – and to Blackstone, our new anchoring member! Read more.

Whole Foods Community Giving Day

To celebrate its Community Giving Day on 11/2, Whole Foods donated 5% of the proceeds from its stores in Manhattan and Brooklyn to support Governors Island and three other neighborhood parks. Thank you to those who shopped for a good cause! Read more about how the funds will support our Green Zone project, which will enable us to keep the Island’s landscapes healthy and sustainable.
