The grotesque attack in Orlando was the largest mass shooting in American history, and the worst attack ever against an LGBT gathering. But gun violence is an everyday tragedy in this country, with 133 mass shootingsalready in 2016--in most cases with guns purchased legally. Â And sadly violence against LGBT people remains all too common.
We must confront these challenges at every level, by combatting terrorism abroad, countering recruitment in the US, doing more to track lone wolves, once and for all banning assault weapons, and standing up to hate in all its forms.
Tonight uptown residents will be gathering for a vigil to honor those who died in Orlando and to call for an end to hatred that sparked the attack. Â I hope you can join us. Â Details on the vigil below:
