!['*** Happy Update ***
Exactly one year ago today the Dern family, the Fresno Fire Department, the whole world seemed to stop and flip upside down.
On March 29th of 2015, Captain Pete Dern of the Fresno Fire Department fell through the roof of a burning garage being used as a residence.
Captain Dern was in the flames for more than a minute and 30 seconds before his fellow firefighters found him and rescued him. He sustained second and third-degree burns over 70 percent of his body.
While in the Intensive Care Unit, on several occasions, Captain Dern cheated death… and the very best opinions and prognosis was bleak.
Captain Pete Dern required over 6 months of intensive treatment and numerous excruciatingly painful surgeries in the Fresno Community Regional Medical Center Leon S. Peters Burn and Rehab Unit.
Truly amazing to everyone, (not as much to those who know Pete personally) is how strong and healed up he’s become in only a year.
365 days later, Fresno Fire Captain Pete Dern is blessed to be able to walk on the beach with his loving, strong, and supportive family.
He is literally walking the beach... today!
Pete will need more surgeries on his hands and will need to return to the burn clinic often for the better part of the next 2 years. His daily life and routines drastically changed and often challenging… but Pete is extremely happy to be alive.
Thank you Brother Pete for inspiring us all to never give up and to always keep fighting.
You're a hero and a Superman to many thousands of people around the nation... around the world.
You are a miracle in human form.
Here’s to your beautiful life, family and many more walks on the beach to come!

give me a tool
Hand me an axe
a Halligan too
Put a pack on my back
a hose in my hand
I’ll set out and prove
I meet the demand
I’ll cut holes in the roof
and force open the door
Look for victims to rescue
as I crawl on the floor
I’ll give all that I’ve got
and then give some more
Train harder and longer,
to be better than before.
I’m courageous and strong
I will conquer all fears
I’ll leave nothing behind
except my blood, sweat and tears

!['"Firefighters"
Not many people remember us,
Not many people care.
Unless a life is saved or lost,
While we are fighting there.
We learn to respect the fire we fight,
And even love it too.
In order to end it's destructive path,
It's what we train to do.
There are many who cannot comprehend,
Why we love the things they fear.
We're the first they call in their time of need,
It's the reason that we're here.
The next alarm might make us proud,
And heroes of some kind,
Or maybe it will be our last,
In service to mankind.
But whatever fate may bring us,
It doesn't change our hearts.
We're Firefighters to the end,
We'll always do our part.

!['“Why is Everyone so Angry?”
I recently went to the UL-FSRI (Firefighter Safety Research Institute) Visitors Day. The goal was to see what they were about and to find my own answers straight from them.
You see I don't own a training company, I am not on any type of panels, but what I am and so was the rest of the firefighters that were there, we are students of the craft. We had the same goal and that was to gain knowledge and I believe that is exactly what happened.
The day started with what tests are going to be conducted, went into a meet and greet, then proceed to the floor to exam the houses. As we were going through and looking at the set up, the first thing I noticed was the amount of man hours, logistics, and coordinating that took place for these tests, it was amazing.
As we continued our tour, Steve Kerber was explaining to us some of the tests they were conducting and what they are looking at, just a couple of examples are: victim outcome (Burns), and how is the water acting inside the house.
It was then, at that moment it hit me, Kerber and his team really do care about our profession. Listening to them speak, these guys are not selling anything, they never shoved anything down our throats, if anything they wanted to hear our thoughts and answered our questions. It was very transparent. Not one time did I hear any of the UL-FSRI team say “This is the only way”.
After spending the day at UL-FSRI, and talking to some very educated firefighters, well more like listening, cause when you are in a room with that amount of knowledge and experience from around the country and Canada it is better to listen than talk. I was able to leave knowing all my questions were answered, and I gained extra knowledge about the profession.
On my flight home could not help to think, what is the argument? Why is everyone so up in arms about what UL-FSRI is doing? We always talk about thinking outside the box, all they are doing is stepping back inside the box.
What I mean by this is they are looking at some very old tactics and researching them. Lloyd Layman started this over 50 years ago and the profession called him a genius.
To sum this up, the goal of our job is to be an effective firefighter. I honestly believe that is what this group is trying to help us with, they are not trying to take anything away from the fire ground.
They are trying to give us answers to what is happening on the fire ground.
