STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The FDNY has identified the firefighter who was injured while fighting a three-alarm blaze in Huguenot Monday night as Lawrence J. Wasser.
Wasser, 23, a probationary firefighter who is assigned to Ladder 82 in Great Kills, is recovering from serious burns on both of his hands suffered while responding to the fire at 1053 Sinclair Ave.
The November graduate of the FDNY Fire Academy who, public records indicate, lives in New Springville, is in stable condition at Staten Island University Hospital.
"While operating inside the home, the supportive beams on the first floor collapsed as a result of heavy fire conditions, causing Firefighter Wasser to fall through the floor and into the flame-filled basement below," the FDNY statement said.
Fire marshals have determined that the blaze in the two-story, two-family home was an accidental electrical fire.
About 100 firefighters responded to the three-alarm blaze before it was brought under control at around 10 p.m., according to officials. The fire appeared to have started in the basement, an FDNY spokesman said.
The Buildings Department did an inspection and found that the fire was concentrated in the area of the boiler and hot water heater, according to a spokesman for Buildings. The FDNY cut all gas and electric service to the home.

Several 2-foot-by-12-foot floor joists were completely destroyed by fire, causing localized collapse of the dining room floor, the Buildings spokesman said. The FDNY Collapse Unit provided temporary shoring to affected areas of the structure.

Extensive damage due to water and firefighting operations was seen by the Buildings inspector in the cellar and first floor.
The city Buildings Department issued a Full Vacate Order for the structure due to the interior collapse, a Buildings spokesman said.
