Prague testing 21 meter ‘monster’ bus
CapaCity L bus is one possible solution for the airport line
A bus measuring 21 meters is being tested by Prague Integrated Transit (PID) and the Prague Public Transit Company (DPP).
The bus will run on the 119 line from Metro Veleslavín to Václav Havel Airport Prague.
It can carry up to 191 passengers at once.
The bus is called Mercedes Benz CapaCity L, which is sort of pun for being a city bus with a large capacity.
The public will have a chance to check it out on Feb. 9, 10 and 14 on the following schedule:
Anticipated departures from the stop Nádraží Veleslavín: 12:50, 13:50, 14:50, 15:50, 16:50, 17:50, 18:50.
Anticipated departures from the stop at Terminal 1: 13:05, 14:05, 15:05, 16:05, 17:05, 18:05, 19:05.
Since it is a test run, the trip will be free, according to the PID website. The bus will make all the normal stops on the way to and from the airport.
The runs really are a test, and the DPP had to get several temporary exemptions to run a bus of this size as it exceeds the current size limit.
“Testing it in traffic is one of the first concrete actions showing the long-term goal to strengthen the passenger capacity at Prague Airport. DPP will gain operational and practical experience for selecting the most suitable vehicle,” PID said on Facebook.
No decision to purchase this particular model has been made yet.
Mercedes Benz says the bus is fuel efficient and cost effective.
“It is an imposing 21 m long and provides space for up to 191 passengers as standard. It consumes well below 0.5 l/100 km per passenger and has only minimal emissions: The CapaCity L high-capacity articulated bus makes an important contribution towards counteracting the transport problems in inner cities,” Mercedes Benz said in the text accompanying a promotional video.
“The new CapaCity L is anything but on the usual scale: at 21 m in length, it is around three meters longer than conventional articulated buses. It is therefore the answer to current transport problems, since frequently used bus lines are reaching their limits as passenger numbers continue to rise. With the CapaCity L, transport operators can carry far more passengers with the same number of buses,” the vehicle maker said, adding that the bus was cost effective.
