Make sure you check out the IAFF’s Fire Ground Survival Training Program. The purpose of the Fire Ground Survival program is to ensure that training for Mayday prevention and Mayday operations are consistent between all fire fighters, company officers and chief officers. Fire fighters must be trained to perform potentially life-saving actions if they become lost, disoriented, injured, low on air or trapped. These training exercises must be consistent throughout the fire service.

Aaron Speers A second set of properly fitted gear (not a "generic" spare set), is an absolute must in my opinion. Gear does not only get contaminated from fire on scene but also "live fire" training, fuel spills, blood/bio-hazards etc. Contaminated gear should be bagged on scene as to not bring into the apparatus and leach into the seats where it will contaminate our station uni's and ultimately our living/training area.

Michael Meixner The department I retired from issued us a second set of fitted gear. They also required us to wash our gear on a regular schedule. A second set of gear kept us safer and in service.
