HIGHLAND PARK, Mich. (WDIV) - A massive fire at a warehouse in Highland Park has been burning for hours, sending thick smoke up into the air that can be seen for miles.

The fire broke out around 2:30 a.m. at the corner of Manchester Parkway and Hamilton Avenue, north of the Davison Freeway.

The warehouse is a mix of recycling facilities and business. Detroit Fire Deputy Fire Chief Michael Ridley said plastics, papers and wood fueled the fire. Some propane tanks that were outside the warehouse were safety removed.

“At this point, our strategy is to contain it, drown it with water, and extinguish it," Ridley said.

Firefighters are working to extinguish the fire from above in water ladder trucks.

No injuries have been reported. Some townhouses that are near the warehouse are being evacuated.

Ridley said it could be at least 24 hours before investigators will be able to get in to determine a cause.
