ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. — A local firefighter who fell two floors in a burning home tells his story of survival. The accident happened nearly a week ago when Roanoke County firefighters were called to a fire at a home on Green Hill Drive.
The scanner blared, "Mayday, mayday, mayday! Firefighter Mauck has fallen through the floor."
"I'm in the basement. I'm OK," radioed firefighter Robert Mauck who was caught in the floorboards. Mauck said when he fell, his captain immediately got on the radio. "He yelled for me," commented Mauc. "I was attempting to yell back to him, but he was unable to hear me."
