!['Temperatures in New York City are expected to dip below freezing over the next several days. Prepare for dangerously cold days and nights by following our #FDNYSmart tips:
* If you are using a space heater, remember to keep it at least 3 feet from blankets, curtains and other materials.
* Don’t use a space heater near water, and keep pets and children away, as well.
* Ensure that heaters and electric blankets are plugged directly into the wall outlet, and never go to sleep while your heater or blanket are turned on.
* Electric blankets should be discarded if they are more than 10 years old, have scorch marks or have discolored or cracked cords.
* If using a fireplace for warmth, place a glass or metal screen in front to prevent embers or sparks from jumping out.
* Remember to never attempt to warm your home using your oven. Use appliances only for their intended purposes.
* Stay off the ice. You risk your life, and the lives of first responders, when you attempt to walk on frozen water.

Out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrest is responsible for an estimated 160,000 deaths a year nationally, and CPR, or Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation, is a life-saving technique that helps increase survival rates for victims of cardiac arrest. It works by maintaining blood flow to the heart and brain until help arrives. The Be 911 Compressions Only CPR program, taught by certified FDNY EMS personnel, equips New Yorkers with the skills to act in the event of cardiac arrest by offering free instruction across the five boroughs. Congratulations to the FDNY United DBRT for being crowned champions in the 4th Annual Dragon Boat Festival of Puerto Rico. The team won both golds in the 500M Major Mixed and 500M Major Open Divisions on Saturday, February 6, 2016 at the Olympic Venue of Lake Cerrillos in Ponce, Puerto Rico. The team competed against many teams from different regions, such as California, Florida, and even the national teams of Puerto Rico. They are very gracious for their victorious achievement and have made a reputable name for the FDNY in the Dragon Boat Community. The team currently is still training vigorously in the off-season. Open-water season will commence this spring in April 2016.

“When we walked in, the fire was on the first floor and the flames were lapping up the stairs. Firefighter David Martin knocked back the flames with an extinguisher and we ran up to find the kids.
