NEW DELHI: A Delhi Police sub-inspector shot his alleged lover five times following an argument at a park in Dwarka, then pumped three bullets into himself in a fit of violence that left both dead on Sunday.

Police said the cop, Vijender Verma, 30, posted with the Ranhola police station, was in a relationship with the 26-year-old woman who had allegedly been pressuring him to marry her. Verma was already married. His wife and two children lived in Jhajjar, Rajasthan.

The cop had also been missing work frequently and had been served a show-cause notice about it. All this had taken a toll on Verma, police sources said.

The woman, Nikita Chauhan, worked as a reporter in a newspaper brought out from Uttam Nagar. Documents recovered from her purse are being scanned to establish the immediate trigger for the violence, police said.

The shooting was reported around noon from a DDA park opposite an apartment complex at Sector 4, Dwarka. Eyewitnesses said Chauhan had had a heated argument with another person before the policeman arrived. The two sat down on a bench but soon started arguing.

In the midst of the exchange of words, Verma suddenly stood up, pulled out his service pistol and repeatedly fired at the woman. "He then pointed the pistol at himself and fired three more rounds before slumping to the ground," said Barrister Singh, who saw the shooting and called up the police.

The two were rushed to a private hospital in sector 12 where the woman was declared dead on arrival while Vijender was referred to the AIIMS trauma centre, where he died during treatment. Police said Chauhan had five bullet injuries in her torso while two of the shots Verma fired on himself had punctured his lungs.

Chauhan's neighbours said she had met Verma in 2012. The two soon became intimate and the woman moved in with Verma although she too was married.

The cop's colleagues said he was infatuated with the woman and even took unwarranted leaves to meet her. His disinterest in work had led to his transfer to Ranhola police station from Uttam Nagar.

However, the relationship began to turn sour after Verma revealed that he was already married, police said. The woman approached senior police officers and had registered a rape complaint against Verma at the Uttam Nagar police station. A month later, officers said, she requested the the police to quash the FIR against Verma against an affidavit apparently because the sub-inspector had agreed to divorce his wife.

"Verma belonged to a conservative family and when he spoke of divorcing his wife and leaving his children, his father sternly told him to stay with his family. On the other hand, Chauhan kept pressuring him to expedite the divorce. He was very tense over all this," a police officer said

Chauhan's family members said she had shifted to parent's house after staying with Verma but would meet him from time to time.

Preliminary investigations suggest Verma had planned to end the relationship. He issued a service pistol for himself in the name pursuing a group of robbers and reached the park to meet Chauhan. Police said as soon as she started arguing, Vijender shot her.

Situations like these clearly show the fall in moral fibre amongst young Indians. A complete lack of understanding of Indian values and if an attempt is done to revive teaching of Indian social and spiritual values to the young then the sickularist, feminist brigade supported by idiotic political parties will raise the bogey of Hindutva. I look upon this as the process of hastening of the end of Kaliyuga, when adharma increases beyond a limit God has to come to take corrective action.
