Travel and statistics site puts Brno in Europe’s top 20

People tend to think of Prague and the Czech Republic as synonyms, but there are other cities.

The travel and statistics website Numbeo tracks eight parameters for 143 cities, and comes up with a quality of life index.

Brno, and not Prague, was surprisingly the highest ranking city in the Czech Republic for quality of life, as noticed by Czech news server iDnes.cz

The parameters include purchasing power, safety, health care, consumer prices, property-to-income ratio, traffic commute time, pollution and climate.

Worldwide, Brno came in at 46, while it was 18^th in Europe and second in Eastern Europe, beaten by Gdańsk, Poland.

Prague came in at number 58 worldwide, 24^th for Europe and fifth for Eastern Europe. Two cities in Romania were between Prague and Brno in third and fourth place for the Eastern European region.

Brno scored high is safety, health care and climate. It was moderate in purchasing power, property-to-income ratio and pollution. It scored low in traffic commute time and very low in consumer prices.

Brno, the second largest city in the Czech Republic and the capitol of the South Moravia region, has recently been developing as a high-tech center with technical universities and EU-supported programs attracting young people. The city and its surroundings are home to many tech startup companies as well as branches of tech multinationals.

The city has some 810,000 in the greater urban area but just 377,440 in the statutory city, as of 2015.

The city does have some tourist attractions, including modern design Tugendhat Villa, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Prague also scored high on safety, health care, property-to-income ratio and climate. It was moderate in purchasing power, traffic commute time and pollution. It scored very low in consumer prices.

Prague is often noted as a must-see tourist destination, with the entire city center listed by UNESCO.

Its population in 2015 was 1.2 million, with 2.2 million in the greater urban area.

Globally, Canberra and Adelaide, both in Australia, took the top two spots. Ho Chi Minh City was last.

For all of Europe, Edinburgh, Scotland, was first, followed by Zurich, Switzerland.

Moscow was in last place for both Europe and Eastern Europe.

Numbeo.com was launched in April 2009, and its research and available data are not influenced by any governmental organization, the website states. Its founder, Mladen Adamovic, worked as a software engineer at Google and other firms.
