The National Police have tightened security across the country following suicide bombings and armed attacks in the heart of the capital on Thursday.

National Police spokesman Insp.Gen. Anton Charliyan said that as of 5 p.m. Thursday, an alert one status was implemented nationwide.

The status was escalated for all relevant agencies and officials to maximize security, especially in terror-prone areas, such as police posts, government offices, foreign-associated sites and embassies, he said on Thursday evening.

"[We are] on full alert because we cannot predict [terrorists'] movements. Their hiding places are not only in Jakarta or in Java but throughout Indonesia," he said, urging people to be aware of their surroundings and to cooperate with the police.

The blasts and gunshots on Jl. MH Thamrin in Central Jakarta on Thursday afternoon claimed seven lives, including five terrorists, police confirmed.

The police have coordinated with the Indonesian Military (TNI) regarding security measures. Authorities have also tightened security at airports across the country. (rin)(+)

There are a few things I would like to highlight here after the vicious attack at the Sarinah department store on Thursday. Firstly, the police officers must deserve an appreciation for bravely facing the deadly attack by irresponsible terrorists targeting at the policers though there have been victims from us injured in the attack. I don’t think without the best effort ever by our National police officers shown at the attack there would have been more victims but they were brave in blocking the attack from causing many more lives. We have to admit this if the police had not been deployed earlier on the spot the Thamrin area would have been in flame and in chaos, but I must give four thumbs up to our brave police officers without them, we would have seen blood everywhere around the scene.
Secondly, I would like to suggest that there must not be any negative comments upon the National Police in the way they dealt with the attack. I am sure our National Police with Densus 88 are the best anti-error police in the world in dealing with terrorists regardless of their bad image in our country, they have shown their best sacrificing themselves, they don’t dare to die for the nation so the public must stop jerks, negative comments about their action especially in dealing with the Sarinah attack.
Thirdly, all what they did in dealing with the Sarinah attack would have failed if they had not been supported in prayer by the Indonesian peace lovers who pray night and day for the safety of the Indonesian nation and God listened to the prayers of the righteous people not to the wicked so through our National Police with Densus 88, we are saved from the attack of the terrorists badly organized by the invisible hand, i.e. God himself so there is no excuse we as a nation must give thanks to first to God through Him our police officers involved in dealing with the attack could save more lives. Pray for Indonesia and our National Police so that any attack from the terrorists also considered as evil acts will not succeed in screwing up everything in our beloved nation.
Fourthly, in order to be able to detect similar attacks in the future I would suggest that the President discuss ways or solutions to detect such attacks with the Police, the TNI, the governors, regent heads in their areas or regions together with the people of Indonesia in strengthening security in their environment the same as previously done by the former President Soeharto such as Siskambling (environmental security system), etc, as a way to prevent terror attacks.
Lastly, the National Police/Densus 88 have done their best, sacrificed their lives and face no fear in combating the Sarinah terrorists so from now on this is wake-up call not show the same bad perception upon the image of our national police, they are part of our nation, they are brothers and sisters helping us to protect and secure the people, we must raise a cap upon their bravery ignoring their lives in stopping the terror. Four thumbs up to the National Police, bravo the Polri and Indonesia.

The entire episode was a charade.......the government/police knew beforehand which means it was an exercise or a false flag.......they claim bombs were thrown into Starbucks which was not true....no bombs entered the building.
The alleged bombs went off in the car park.....there were two people on the ground near to the fence and another two next to the little white car......three very small explosion went off neither of which could or would cause any damage.....the car was totally in tack revealing this was one big coverup......so many mistakes were made....this is an embarrassment for all taking part/
A classic false flag event

AFTER TERRORIST WAS ATTACKED JAKARTA, WHAT SHOULD WE DO ?
By : Otjih Sewandarijatun *)
Suicide bombers and gunmen attacked the heart of Indonesia's capital on Thursday and the assault was claimed by Islamic state, the first time the radical group has targeted the world's most populous Muslim nation.Just seven people were killed in Jakarta despite multiple blasts and a gunfight, and five of them were the attackers themselves, but the brazenness of the assault suggested a new brand of militancy in a country where low-level strikes on police are common.Indonesia has seen attacks by Islamist militants before, but a coordinated assault by a team of suicide bombers and gunmen is unprecedented and had echoes of the sieges seen in Mumbai seven years ago and in Paris last November.
"A group of soldiers of the caliphate in Indonesia targeted a gathering from the crusader alliance that fights the Islamic State in Jakarta," the group said in a statement. Jakarta's police chief told reporters: "ISIS is behind this attack definitely," using a common acronym for Islamic State, and he identified an Indonesian militant, Bahrun Naim, as the man responsible for plotting it. Police believe Naim is in the Syrian city of Raqqa. Naim urged his Indonesian audience to study the planning, targeting, timing, coordination, security and courage of the Paris jihadis. In the Telegram exchange with Reuters, Naim also spoke of more mundane affairs, explaining that he enjoyed life in Syria and had no plans to return to Indonesia. "I move around, depending on where our emir orders us to go. It's good here in Syria. There's electricity, accommodation, water and it's free. The services provided by them are good, cheaper than in Indonesia," he said. Alarm around the world over the danger stemming from Islamic State increased after the Paris attacks and the killing of 14 people in California in December. On Tuesday, a Syrian suicide bomber killed 10 German tourists in Istanbul. Authorities there suspect the bomber had links to Islamic State.
Meanwhile, President Joko Widodo has said the nation and the people should not be scared and should not be defeated by acts of terror. The United States condemned the attack "in the strongest terms" and said it was committed to its strategic partnership with Indonesia and would stand by it, a U.S. National Security Council spokesman said.
In condemning the violence during a visit to London, US Secretary of State John Kerry said "these acts of terror are not going to intimidate nation-states from protecting their citizens and continuing to provide real opportunity, education, jobs, possibilities of a future." The attack prompted a security lockdown in central Jakarta and enhanced checks all over the city.
By evening, a large screen atop the building that houses the Starbucks displayed messages that said "#prayforjakarta" and "Indonesia Unite." Some people left flowers near the stricken traffic police post, along with a wreath that read "Deep condolences. We are not afraid."
Emerging Militant Networks
Eventough, police and intelligence agency have been largely successful in destroying domestic militant cells since then, but officials have more recently been worrying about a resurgence inspired by groups such as Islamic State and Indonesians who return after fighting with the group.
Supporters of the Islamic State group circulated a claim of responsibility on social media resembling the militants' previous messages. The claim was shared on Twitter late Thursday, and the US-based SITE Intelligence Group said it also was circulated among pro-IS groups on other media. The message said attackers carried out the Jakarta assault and had planted several bombs with timers. It differed from Indonesian police on the number of attackers, saying there were four. It said they wore suicide belts and carried light weaponry. The statement could not be independently verified by The Associated Press, though it resembled previous claims made by the group, which controls territory in both Iraq and Syria. Meanwhile, Jakarta police chief Major General Tito Karnavian said the attackers had links with IS and were part of a group led by Bahrum Naim, an Indonesian militant who is now in Syria.
Those and others were blamed on the al-Qaida-inspired Jemaah Islamiyah. Following a crackdown by security forces, militant strikes in recent years have been smaller and less deadly, and have targeted government authorities, mainly police and anti-terrorism forces. Terrorism experts say IS supporters in Indonesia are drawn from the remnants of Jemaah Islamiyah.
What should we do ?
After terrorist group was attacked Jakarta yesterday, it has raised a basic question for all of us, what should we do ? Actually, its has several strategies if we want to counter extremism and terrorism from strategic humanitarian assistance, disenggement, deradicalization, intelligence cooperation, strengthening law and coping some of number interfaith group and peace organization including mass media.
Meanwhile, we have a common job to always maintain our condusive situation after terrorist attacking Jakarta. However, the terror activities could be happened due to we had minimized attention on our surrounding environment.
Besides, a number of interfaith groups such as Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), Muhammadiyah, the Indonesian Communion of Churches (PGI), the Indonesian Bishops Conference (KWI), the High Council of Confucianism in Indonesia (Matakin) and the Indonesian Buddhist Association (Walubi) must persuade their adherents aren’t join with fundamentalism, extremism and terrorism.
To combating and countering terrorism and extremism, we could learn more from terrorist attacks in Jakarta yesterday such as we got strong signals if the government paid strong attention to handle situations as quick as they could be done. It has showed the presence of government on situation. Besides that, we also look all of national stakeholders condemed terrorist attacks and they gave a support to government to make and to take whatever will be done by government to stabilizing our national security.
Furthermore, mass media and netizens have participated to promulgating a massive massage “We don’t afraid on terror attacks”. We must appreciate the mainstream of Indonesian newspaper also diseminating positive message to our people. These condition make terrorist group purpose doesn’t happen.
Last but not least, vigilance on the possibility of next terrorism attacks is a must, because if the global situation doesn’t change and our people prosperity doesn’t appear, next terror could be happened. We must remember ISIS’s cell might be planted in our society. Togetherness to countering and combating terror manuevre is our strength. If we can keep these spirit, hopefully terror attacks in Indonesia could be erased.

The police should have been on hightened alert when the 9 terrorists were apprehended prior to New Year, but the "soft approach" allowed for relaxed security measures after 1 Jan 16. Well the terrorist gave a tiny prelude of a "concert"
bohongbohong
luckily they seemed poorly armed and badly organised.

@bohongbohong- the terrorist, police or both?

You have to give praise where praise is due.  Densus 88 and the Military were fast in responding and dealing with the problem, while the police sorta floundered around like fish out of water.

My hope is that this is a wake up call that Radical Muslims if given any leeway will abuse thier freedom (which invariably ends up in innocent lives lost).  We have to nip the cancer in the bud, whether it's exile, executions, or reprogramming.

The larger problem associated with this situation is the lack of real world education, and the extremely huge islamic education pushed.  This needs to be addressed so future generations are not retarded into joining ISIS or other terrorist organizations (FPI, FBR, PKS, PPP, JI, etc etc)

but as bohong2 has indicated thank god they were badly organized or this could have been worse.
blah3times
the larger problem is the huge inequality in living standard around the world. Not everyone is content to be poor and these people are poorly educated and easily influenced. Much like how most of the west cannot see that the actions of their governments has done much harm in destabilising the region. We ned to make Syria a country again. Where the economy can flourish and the people can sustain themselves. I say 'we', because it is for our own benefit and as a Brit, we are significantly responsible for the mess the world is in.
Islamisfunky
Prob with that is a lot of the Islamic nutters come from wealthy familys. It is the ideology that has to be challenged but the louder voices are all screaming blame or saying the actors are not Muslims ergo excusing and removing any likelihood of serious Islamic soul searching.
Until that happens things will only get worse.
