FIRE COMMISSIONER DANIEL A. NIGRO PRESIDES OVER THE GRAUDATION CEREMONY OF 29 FIRE PROTECTION INSPECTORS
 The graduating class of Fire Protection Inspectors are awarded their diplomas by Commissioner Nigro and Chief Leonard.
On Tuesday, January 26, Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro and Chief of Department James E. Leonard presided over the graduation ceremony of 29 Fire Protection Inspectors. The Bureau of Fire Prevention is responsible for ensuring that fire safety practices and regulations are both in place and enforced throughout more than 975,000 buildings and properties in New York City.
“Every day you work, you will be improving the safety of our city, and helping protect the Firefighters, Paramedics and EMTs who respond to more than 1.7 million calls each year” said Commissioner Nigro. “A city this large needs strong fire prevention inspectors” added Chief Leonard, “and with each fuel system, garage, hazardous material site, festival and gas storage site you inspect, you’ll be keeping New Yorkers safe, and arming our members with the information they need to be safe when responding” he added.
 Classmates rejoice after the ceremony.
“My whole family is here. It’s a special day and I’m very proud” said Valedictorian Daniel J. Callahan. “I was 10 years old when 9/11 occurred, and I’ve been inspired to become a part of the Fire Department ever since.”
The Bureau of Fire Prevention’s main responsibilities include enforcing the City's Building Code, Electrical Code and Fire Code related to Fire Alarm Systems. In order to enforce these codes, Fire Protection Inspectors inspect standpipes, sprinkler systems, fuel oil and burner systems, air conditioning units, dry cleaning establishments, automotive service stations, compressed gases, and the storage, use and handling of hazardous materials and flammable gas, to name just a few areas that fall under their care.
 Commissioner Nigro praises the hard work of today's graduating class and the Bureau of Fire Prevention.
This past June the Department experienced the first month in its history with zero fire related deaths, which Commissioner Nigro and Chief Leonard attributed in part to effective fire prevention procedures and enforcement. “Each member of the Bureau of Fire Prevention - every Inspector in every unit - has played a pivotal role in our success”, said Commissioner Nigro. “The efforts of our Fire Inspectors are far reaching to say the least”.
