Deril Stubenrod Yes, and we are thankful too. In your service you show strength & resolved demeanor. As a retired EMT/ Firefighter myself I agree with you. I've continued my service as a Chaplain helping first responders to deal with the challenges we face. One such challenge is PTSD. I will keep you all lifted in prayer for safety each day. God bless.

2016 is starting out to be a busy year for my fire department, Fresno Fire, CA ... 17 days into the new year and we've had 22 working structure fires, including several multi-alarms.
Here is a recent news story about a family (including a baby) that some of my fellow firefighters help save from a 2 story apartment on fire... the fire started in the stairwell and blocked their egress...
It was a busy morning for Fresno Firefighters, who tackled two apartment fires hours apart.Crews were called around midnight to a complex at Elizabeth and Poplar.Eight people were inside, but escaped safely before the firefighters…

The job of a firefighter is one of the toughest jobs on the planet... between the things we are exposed to and all the other things trying to actively kill us, at one point or another it makes all of us wonder "Is this job worth it?"

Randy Franklin I took this job to help others. I knew the risk then as I know it now. Our God only takes us when he is ready. If that time is while I'm on duty trying to help my fellow man then that will be my time and I hope I make my family proud. I never thought I would see the day we would need a flack vest but yet we carry them behind our seat. God be with all brothers and sisters on the job.

Cheryl Biechler I just read everyone's responses, which is why I'm still on this site. I am "the public". I joined this site to follow progress of a hs classmate, Capt Dern; but I've stayed out of deepening appreciation for all firefighters. I'm learning a lot here and have grown thankful as I've read about "what it's like" for you all. Thank you for your sacrificial work!!!!!

Dennis Jackson Very good article! Every brother and sister firefighter needs to read. Then look around your firehouse and see if someone is struggling. If so get them help! Tell your chief so they get help before it's to late.
