WICHITA, Kan. -
While many of enjoy the holidays with your family, many first responders are on duty to protect you.
The firefighters at station 10 are cooking up a delicious Christmas day meal.
On the menu, ham, green beans, macaroni and cheese, and all the cakes and pies to satisfy that sweet tooth.
Firefighter John Hattrup said a lot of the food they're enjoying comes from people they serve.
"When the local apartment complexes or just the people in our responding areas take time out of their day to come by and say thank you, we really appreciate," Hattrop said. "It makes being at work a little easier and makes doing the job all worth wild."
Hattrup has two young boys who were asleep when he left for work this morning, so his wife brought them up to the fire station to spend time with their dad.
"It makes today, being away from home a little easier when they get to come up and say hi," he said. "Both my boys get along great with the crew. It's like having five more uncles."
Hattrup said this is part of life for anybody in public safety, fire, EMS, police or in the military. 365 days a year, somebody is on duty.
"It's always nice when someone stops by on the holidays and thinks of the people working today," Hattrup said.
