FF INJURED AT TN HOUSE FIRE

Thursday, December 17, 2015  The Springfield Fire Department is investigating two fires that completely destroyed a 17th Avenue East home and injured a firefighter early Wednesday morning, according to Chief Jimmy Hamill.

Emergency responders were first called to the home on 17th Avenue East shortly after 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

A male resident called 911 and told the authorities that his water heater had caught fire, Hamill said, adding that flames were visible when his department arrived at the home.

About 15-20 minutes later, as crews were just getting into the firefight, one of Hamill's men was injured and had to be transported to NorthCrest Medical Center, the chief said.

"He's going to be out for a while," Hamill said of the firefighter, later identified as Dustin Dudley, an 11-year veteran of the Springfield Fire Department.

"He was fighting the fire inside and as he was attempting to clear out some of the smoke, he tried to raise a window that was ei... [ more ]

COURAGE AND VALOR AT YOUR FIRE DEPARTMENT?

Tuesday, December 15, 2015  Earlier this week we learned of the extreme courage shown by District Fire Chief Don Smith from Ottawa, Canada - when his actions resulted in the saving of a little kids life. It's a big deal.

Don Smith's example reminds us of what courage and valor are. And while it is very difficult for most Firefighters to accept praise, thanks or recognition just ..for "doing the job", there are those rare times where it is well deserved. There are several recognition's in North America annually for Firefighters who were "there" and displayed courage and valor that truly made a difference.

One of the most coveted awards in our business is the Chief Ray Downey Courage and Valor Award which commemorates the life and career achievements of Deputy Chief Ray Downey, who gave his life in the Line of Duty on September 11, 2001 at the WTC. It is presented annually at FDIC by Fire Engineering/Pennwell.

As you know, Deputy Chief Downey was Chief of Rescue a... [ more ]

TX FF SUFFERS INJURIES IN FALL FROM CATWALK AT FIRE

Tuesday, December 15, 2015  A Longview firefighter is being evaluated after falling from a catwalk while responding to a fire at a manufacturing building Monday morning.Longview Fire Chief Johnny Zackary says crews were called around 10:40 a.m. to the Crosby Manufacturing building, near Dana Way and LEDCO Drive in Longview. Zackary says by the time crews arrived, heavy black smoke was pouring from the building.

Construction crews were doing "hot work" when the fire started, removing vats that were part of the previous company's operations. Zackary says it appears the vats were coated in residue used to put frame rails on vehicles, which was sparked by construction workers welding and cutting to remove the vats.

During the course of fighting the fire, Zackary says one firefighter fell from a catwalk; he was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation, but Zackary says it appears the injury is non-life-threatening. Employees and construction crews inside the building at the time of the... [ more ]

SHOVE IT UNDER THE RUG? I Don't Think That's Gonna Happen.

Tuesday, December 15, 2015  So... last weekend in Prince Georges County, Maryland, there was an extremely disturbing incident involving career and volunteer Firefighters. Reports are that they physically got into a fight or fights upon arriving on the scene. Fighting Fire-Fighters.

This is hardly the first time this has happened. Actually, back in the 1800's volunteer Firefighters were a threat unto themselves. While buildings burned, New York Firefighters brawled and beat up rivals in other fire companies. During the Draft Riots of the Civil War — a grisly, episode depicted in Martin Scorcese’s Gangs of New York**– where one fire company set a fire and then stopped others from putting it out.
How 'bout that. Yep- according to FEMA, this is officially the earliest recorded documentation of BMA. (Brotherhood My A$$) occurring in the North American fire service. And be sure to definitely watch for the fire company "hydrant hider" in this video.

Monday, December 14, 2015  The voice on the fire radio was calm, but the words couldn't have been more urgent.
"Emergency, emergency," the fire official said at a warehouse fire on the Far South Side early Monday. "Mayday, mayday.  We got a fireman down, fell through a hole in the floor. Get an ambulance to the front of the building."

Inside the warehouse at 92nd Street and Baltimore Avenue, Daniel Capuano and other firefighters had been searching through thick smoke for the source of a fire on the second floor when Capuano fell down an elevator shaft to the basement around 2:40 a.m., according to Fire Commissioner Jose Santiago.

Capuano, 42 and a 15-year veteran of the department, was rushed to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead less than two hours later, fire officials said.
