Steve Cassidy, president of the Uniformed Firefighters Union, said the deal ensures that every FDNY ladder company has five firefighters.

The FDNY union has narrowly agreed to ratify a contract, after the city agreed to “set in stone” that five firefighters would be assigned to every ladder company.
The vote to approve the retroactive, seven-year pact passed by fewer than 200 votes, despite concerns that the 11.5% raise over seven years that was offered in the deal was too stingy.
“This agreement permanently sets in stone that every FDNY ladder company must have five firefighters for the safety of firefighters and the citizens we are sworn to protect,” said Uniformed Firefighters Association president Steve Cassidy.
The agreement also brings 20 engine companies back up to five-firefighter staffing levels, reversing cuts by the Bloomberg administration in 2010 and 2011.
